A Rollercoaster Ride With A Difference

6

Now this is a rollercoaster ride I've love to try!! Carel de Winter's concept combines a traditional ride with user-selectable CG videos to create a wide diversity of experiences. It looks amazing.

This video is a proof of concept for a new kind of ride, in which a rollercoaster car is also a kind of flight simulator. This means that several different rides can be made on the same piece of track, and that the intensity of the g forces felt would be far greater than those associated with a conventional simulator. I was commisioned to do this piece originally about 18 months ago, and the process that was followed can be accessed on this thread.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    • The concept is having each car on a roller-coaster be a flight simulator. The intention is that instead of sitting in a box that rocks back and forth to simulate motion, you sit in a box that is actually moving.

  1. If that was made on a good track with a well made set of simulations, it would easily become my favorite roller-coaster ever.

I like this demo video. It was put together better than any roller-coaster proof of concept video I have ever seen. Job well done.

I also love the idea, however, it would not be possible to make it have the level of variation that some flight simulators have. The flight simulator at Disney World called "Star Tours" has been a little different every time I have ridden it. On a ride like the one in this concept, it would be able to look different, but it would feel the same every time.
