In this 'behind the scenes' video we see a bit of the design process of the upcoming Gnome version, and a large part was done in Blender. Perhaps the most surprising part is that they're using Blender for prototyping too.

Blender can be used in so many ways it's just great :) i've met people using it for professionaly designing 2D logos, controlling robots, automatic visualizing of webserver statistics, ... and producing 3d art of course
They also have tutorial videos going back 3 years showing gnome designers how to use blender to experiment with their animations.
