Export a fractal from Mandelbulb to Blender with this quick tutorial.
BlenderMonth writes:
Today, Henri challenged himself and decided to create a Fractal and find a way to generate a mesh from the generated shape and finally render it with Cycles. Here is the result !
The software he used for this task are :
- Mandelbulb 3D for Fractal Creation
- Fiji for converting stack of images to actual mesh
- MeshLab MeshLab for cleaning the mesh
- Blender for adding awesomeness and rendering final image.

Awesome ! :)
I didn't know we could do this. Well this could get high poly and awesome fast! :)
fiji is not generating the PGM correctly, all I get is a black image thats 250kb in size and I'm sure thats wrong. From that PGM I cannot generate a proper OBJ file. Any ideas?
Hi Karl, Did you try to save as PGM, and then, repeat the operation and save as obj (without closing the app or anything ?)
I also have this problem! You missed the lesson, save the screenshot OBJ! What to do ?? I do everything for the lesson - but at this stage it does not work too !!
Yup, tried everything, no go. Problem is the PGM is basically black, I'm sure it would have to have a lot of grey scale on there to generate an OBJ.
Actually, it must black and white. There is no grey scale, as the stack of images actually represents voxels. You can try loading your images sequence directly in FIJI and save as>Obj file and see what happens.
I updated the article with an extra image for obj generation.
My PGM is black as well and small in size, but I created an OBJ with it and imported it in Blender - and there was the 3D fractal. Although it seemed to be wrong, it all worked.
The only thing that didn't work: as Mandelbuld is exporting PNGs it got an exception from FIJI because it couldn't import PNGs as image sequence. I had to convert them to TIFs.
Well, that's strange. When I used a 100x100 resolution, Fiji didn't work with PNG, but with TIF. Now I increased the image resolution to 900x900 and it doesn't work with TIF either so I converted them to BMP and it worked...?
Thanks for the info Gordon. I didn't have any problem with Fiji but it seems to behave quite strangely for some people! Thanks anyway!
