[non-Blender] Open 3D Model Viewer supports 40+ file formats

15

Open 3D Model Viewer is an open source tool for quickly loading and viewing 3D models. It supports a wide range of 3D files formats.

Alexander Gessler writes:

Open 3D Model Viewer (dubbed open3mod) is a free, Open Source viewer for about 40+ file formats. It is based on the Open Asset Import Library project, and replaces its old viewer. It is intended to be a quick, fast viewer for your daily needs. Unfortunately it is available only for Windows though. I've been working on it on and off for about two years now and decided it was time to release something :-)

Supported formats include OBJ, 3DS, BLEND, STL, FBX, DXF, LWO, LWS, MD5, MD3, MD2, NDO, X, IFC and Collada. There is also export support to Collada, OBJ, STL and PLY.

A tabbed UI allows opening multiple scenes at once. 3D views can be split in up to four independent viewports. Different camera modi - orbit, first-person-shooter or axis-aligned - are available for each viewport. New scenes are loaded in the background. Last but not least, the viewer supports skeletal animation.

For 3D developers, open3mod has inspection panels for nearly every part of the scene hierarchy, including debugging animations and transformations.

Any feedback is highly appreciated and anyone is invited to join the hacking on Github.

  1. pretty cool!
    one quick criticism though:
It really should be possible to customize the viewport controls for pan, zoom, orbit etc., ideally offering presets for maya, blender, etc.

Great suggestion, thanks. I think we can do this for the next release! Again, this is a very early first cut :-)

  2. this is actually a pretty useful tool. blender's import-export scripts have been a bit of a problem in the past. and it's hard to find a good free model converter that will work properly with blender meshes. And supporting .blends is definitely a bonus. (but is there anything about a RenderMan .RIB Scene exporter?)

It supports all file formats that Open Asset Import Library can export to. In particular, I'm planning to add 3DS export to it soon.

I'll add RIB to the wishlist as well.

This is quite impressive! One difficulty I have had with import scripts is pieces being misaligned, flipped and so on, this will be greatly useful.
