Introduction to 3D Design & Printing for Kids

6

My friends at Shapeways have collaborated with Youth Digital to produce this awesome 3D printing with Blender course for kids. I really like their tutorial format, where they fast-forward through the entire video first to show you what's coming up. What do you think?

In this 3D printing and modeling course, kids (and adults) learn how to design their own robot for 3D printing! You'll learn Blender, a professional-level, open-source 3D modeling software, working with shapes to create a 3D model of a robot, and preparing and printing your robot with Shapeways. We loved working with Youth Digital to bring this 3-part course to you- for free! We hope you love learning about 3D modeling and 3D printing as much as we loved doing it!

Let's get started.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

      • Actually it is somewhat possible- my son has been playing with Blender and Photoshop since he was about 6. He learns at his own pace, sometimes getting into it for hours at a time over a few weeks then putting it down for a while. I use these and more for work and encouraged him to use them to color with since before he was reading. He actually learned computer terms very early so he could use the interfaces. He would also play video games meant for older kids and keep calling his mom or me in to read the text on the screen. He has always been tech savy!

  1. A great promotion for Blender, but an absurdly irritating presenter. His exaggerated pre-school presentation style is wrong for this level of content, and would annoy my 12 and 10 year old kids. Send him back to Sesame Street!
