Experimental short: Senseless

5

Christian Brinkmann presents his short film 'Senseless' and offers the VFX addon he created during its creation.

Christian writes:

For my Bachelor Thesis I have made an experimental short about human perception. I've tried to visualize my theoretical considerations of the perception of nature and their synaesthetic effects on human beings...

Sensless was primarily produced with blender. As part of the thesis I've developed an addon for a faster organization and reconstruction of vfx shots, which I want to share with you here.

I hope the tool also helps somebody else. Let me know if you have some ideas or suggestions to improve it.

About the video

Senseless is an experimental short about human perception. In this bachelor thesis I've tried to visualize my theoretical considerations of the perception of nature and their synaesthetic effects on human beings. For me nature is a place of clarity and direct experience. But nature also can be a place of the dark and overhelming of devotion and absorbtion. So I tried to generate a hidden world in the present, which attracts our perception, draws and absorbs it. A place like this is charged by our culture with myths and fairy tales. But primarily it is a glade of stunning experience. Every visitor unavoidably joins the devilish malicious game of sensual abberation. But there is a risk of getting lost in the valleys and fields, forests and lakes - lost to a phantasmagorial inebriation. Senseless does not what you to reproduce nature, it wants to actualize it. The film chases the senses back from the woods, it clings to them in order to finally free itself.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
