Krita crowdsourcing campaign started for new version

10

The Krita team is looking to raise €15.000 in order to fund one or two developers to work on version 2.9, which promises a slew of new features.
Boudewijn Rempt writes:

Today we've opened a kickstarter to raise funds for the development of Krita 2.9. For 2.8, Dmitry has worked full-time on Krita, and even for 2.9 he's already done a few cool things like HDR painting with exposure (we'll do a news article on that later today), but we want more for 2.9. We want to fund at least Dmitry, but if the kickstarter is a success, we'll also fund a second developer, Sven Langkamp, who's worked on Krita for ten years now. And if it's a runaway success, the much demanded OSX port will happen :-)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Nice! I actually kinda' hoped that they would do something like this. I hope this sees more than what they're asking. I simply love Krita. I simply can't let this effort go without my support.

I'm not sure... 75k so they can start on a mac port? Kinda poor form, since if I donate toward that and they don't reach that 'goal', then I'm out money, but still can't use the software. Not to mention, they say on the site that they already have a mac mini, but that ' There hasn't been much success to date'. A new mac will help that how?
I'm not saying anything is wrong... just that it sounds like we're missing some info...

    • No, it's not the new mac that would help with this, it's that they need to spend half a year to get it working.

A new mac only allows 2 developers to work on it!

I'll grant you that, but it still comes down to the possibility to the stretch goal not being reached. Kickstarter is supposed to be all or nothing, but this lets them keep the money even if they won't reach the goal for mac versions.

True... It's our first kickstarter, and I'm not all that accustomed to the way it works. My hope was that making this a stretch goal would really mobilize all those mac users who have been asking for an OSX version for the past two, three releases!

    • anything less than 30k will not go towards the mac port, if they exceed said value within the next +/- 27 days then there is a greater possibility of a mac port. if a backer's interest is primarily in the mac port (and not the other features) then this would be the best time to contribute (i.e. when/if 30k is exceeded).
Also the price of a new Mac is arbitary in comparison to the amount of hours it will take to port an entire application to a new platform.

Yes, that's right, on both counts. If we don't get enough funding for a mac port then we might do a separate kickstarter, but that'll be next year, and a mac port will then be for, I guess, 3.1 or 3.2 (we do two releases a year.)
