CG Cookie launches the Blender Market

13

The Blender Market is now open for business! CG Cookie's latest project offers a commercial marketplace for high-quality Blender assets like models, scripts, shaders and more. The project supports the Blender Foundation by allowing all their vendors to donate a percentage of their sales, and in addition 5% of all proceedings of the first 90 days will be donated as well.

Jonathan Williamson writes:

The Blender Community has always been very good about sharing. Whether sharing great models on Blender Artists, advanced scripts in IRC, or useful resources on Blend Swap. But one problem we’ve always had is keeping track of, maintaining, and sustaining the development of these resources for professional use. Working artists and studios need assurance that an asset or tool will be actively supported.

The Blender Market hopes to improve this by creating a dedicated place for artists to find the resources and tools they need. On day one we already have a strong collection of models, shaders, scene setups, and add ons! Go find what you need!

Create, earn money, support Blender

Joining the Blender Market as a vendor gives you the opportunity to earn money for your Blender work, gain exposure and take part in contributing to the professional success of Blender by increasing the numbers of quality assets, resources, and tools available to the Blender Community.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. It looks great, very interested in making some models for it, just a case of finding the time.

I'm surprised Contours isn't on there though, seems like the ideal place for you guys to sell your own tools.

  2. mabye i'm missing something but ain't some of those "assets" available for free on blend swap.is blendswap goin under..why would anyone pay for something they can get for free.and i get the whole support the site deal.just looks like a cash grab.like i said you can get that stuff for free already

    • While vendors can choose to upload their own Creative Commons licensed assets that were previously on Blend Swap, that is not the intent and thus far I don't believe any have done so.

Blend Swap is not going anywhere (in fact Matthew Muldoon, the BlendSwap founder is helping to run both sites).

You're not the first person to express concerns of this being a "cash grab", but I feel this is very short sighted and I hope we convince you otherwise in time.

      • mabye it will be a good thing ,who knows . i have 13 blends on blendswap about 2000 downloads of my work is out there, given away for free. and have gotten alot of stuff off that site .now things are being sold. all i gotta do is change the license on my blends??. i don't mabye it will be a good thing.but then again i can still get "assets" the same as before just not from the blender market .

  3. just for the hell of it i think i'm gonna take all my blend's off of blend swap, pick'em apart and put a price on every object in every scene. And see if i get anything out of it. Probably take a 2 month's to do it, but what the heck.3000 download's so far.Be a good test to see if anyone will actually pay for the things that i've made.
