Quality Tree seedlings from Latvian State Forests

When I saw this message in my mailbox it was spam. As it turns out, it's quite a good Freestyle animation :)

Hello!

We have finished a new TV ad for Latvian State Forests to promote their tree seedling offer.

All the 3D was modelled and animated in Blender. Lines rendered using Freestyle renderer, then AO and Z pass in Blender internal, then composited and put together in After Effects. We are quite happy with the result and hope you will enjoy it also, but I really would like to use this moment and remind few things to developers of freestyle. Although it works quite good, there is often problems with flickering of lines, that is, they show up in one frame and disappear in next, maybe it is possible to somehow make them more stable.. Another thing I already knew is not possible and we kind of worked around that this time, but it is really necessary to have lines on object intersections, because now.. it really makes life harder to add those edges manually and check no object is intersecting anywhere it shouldn't . Of course I understand it is not that simple, otherwise that would be done already, but I think many people would appreciate it very much.. and just want to share experience from production point of view. :)

Another problem I stumbled upon is line geometry deformation options.. (Did that in AE in the end).

While everything look's good while static, there is no way to control how often the noise deformation for lines will change, that means that in every frame noise modifier calculates different noise pattern and that results in very chaotic and fast changes.. maybe there could be added a parameter to control how fast these changes happen or maybe at some interval.

So.. these are my conclusions and I hope freestyle will be developed further, because it is very promising already.

Best wishes to all the Blender community,
Kārlis

  1. You may want to tell Kārlis that you're not the creator if freestyle. :P Otherwise, it's a great animation!
