Tutorial: How to make a grass field

15

Gleb Alexandrov's tutorials are always well prepared and fast paced. Today, he uses particle systems to create this grass field.

Through this tutorial we'll create a wild grass field in Blender, using particle systems (and some tricks). Feel free to share!

If you feel like reading, the text version can be found in 3dArtist magazine, issue 67.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Four sunlamps! Best trick I've seen in a long time. Anyone want to make a multi-sun node object after seeing this? That's going to be my next thing to try... nodified multisun.

  2. Cool I saw this blender tutorial in issue 67 of my monthly subscription to 3DArtist magazine and always wanted a video tutorial for it. I was jealous of maya's PaintFX tool when mentioned in issue 65, or ZBrushes Fiber Mesh. I still want a similar tool in blender but now I feel better about blenders grass capability. Gosh I am starting to sound like some nerdy comic book fan.
Thank you Gleb Alexandrov and keep up the amazing work.

  3. Multi-sun node, hmm. Or direct light with variable size)
And thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

  4. Really nice like always! Great Tutorial and environment set up!
Greb my question is hot to, produce this such an effect in huge amout of place like meadow. Freesh green grass and open environment... Is there any issue with this kind of poligon modeling of grass when we want to achieve huge environment scene - for animation.
    Good Luck! :)

    and please keep going!

    • I think it's possible to make a huge meadow using particle systems (but you're right, it will probably demand some ram and we won't see it in the viewport, only while rendering). All in all, It depends on the shot - for the certain angles, distant grass can be faked using image planes , or displacement, or something else. :)

Ha ha – I love this guy! Fun commentary, great result. I even learned something!
(The multi-sun trick; really, really clever.)

  6. The best thing on this is it show's you can always learn from tutorials. Multiple suns? Now that's thinking outside the box. (sorry to use that overused cliche, but it fits here.)

  7. Making grass and foliage, both for games and renders was one of my recent holiday projects.I didnt use this technique though, I used curves with bevel/extrusion.This looks better though!
You could render out each bunch of grass from a side view, to then map to a polygon for games foliage, much more low poly, but for renders, this method is awsome.
Thanks for the tutorial, it's really great, the result speaks for itself.

  8. I just had occasion to revisit this tutorial in a discussion elsewhere on the web. If Gleb is not part of Blendercookie already, hire this guy!
