What lives underground? Find out in the new BlenderNation weekend contest!
(Image: Daft Snails)
The theme for the next Weekend Contest is inspired by the worms from the previous contest. All those worms live under the ground, and I am wondering what else lives there. So, the topic will be:
"Beneath the Surface"
Of course, feel free to interpret this theme any way you want, you can take it both literally and figuratively. Anything that pops into your mind will do. Just have fun creating those beautiful images!
Post your work below (attach an image and a screenshot if you like), and vote for your winner. The winner will get a post on monday, and will get to pick next weekend’s contest theme. Have fun!

Are there any rules? Other than it has to be original.
There ain't but one rule, man: Salute those who about to rock. o/
Uh, oh, wait, sorry--wrong comment section...
Unfortunately I don't think I'll have any time this weekend.. Here is something I made in about an hour (unfortunately I had to cut the rendering time, so it's rather noisy and low resolution)
Call it "Durin's Bane"
Here's a quicky I whipped up. Cell fracture and a couple particle layers.

I got the feeling this contest's going to be a great one. Shall reserve my voting 'til Sunday.
I mean, it's only fair, since I'm gonna win. ;)
o_o Oh, yes. I went there.
O_O Bring it on!
Ha cool :)
>_> ...So, I got lost in Unreal Engine 4 the whole weekend.
<_< Time gets away from you so fast.
How are you finding it? I've been hearing so much buzz about it recently. Considering trying it out on an upcoming project, but for now happily using Unity.
So, it seems that I am not the only one who has little time this weekend... :P
Anyways, here is my entry. "Peeling Away." This image was the first thing to pop into my head after hearing the theme, so... yeah. This is the product of that thought.
Comments and critiques appreciated!
Enjoy!
The image seems very dark and forces the audience to try to figure out what is going on, not good. Interesting perspective, good. I would say lighten the image and make it obvious what you are trying to show!
Thanks for the suggestions! :) I remade it somewhat and posted a new version- it wasn't AS rushed as my first entry, so I think they turned out better.
I had this already made this image to try out Cycels volume.
And the image fits well here.
Creepy, especially the one that's crawling!
"Out of Sight"
When I first heard the prompt I thought of the Ice Berg saying "just the tip of the ice berg" and decided to create this. It has extensive compositing but it was done in blender cycles. Takes about 45 minutes to render at 1000 samples. As usual comments and critiques welcomed!
the center of the earth.
Any suggestions for improving my picture.
My suggestion would be to make it clear what is going on, All I see is red swirls and a person with spike arms... It might be underground or something. I love the color scheme also there needs to be a place where the eyes should be drawn. ie the person this can be achieved with lighter image around the person. Hope this helps!
Is this better?
Yes, the shapes (walls, ground, etc) are clearer! The pink dude definitely draws the eye!
First work I share as a self beginner.
You can give me some advices if you want ;)
Light usually reflects of water, my only advise would be to remove the black shadows under the fish. You did a great job on the ocean it looks fantastic!
ok, thanks, i will try to make better lightning
Here is an other try for a better lightning
Here is an other render for a better lightning
sorry i have some issues to load my pictures :/
the first picture is a render before compositing, the second is the Good one ;)
The lighting changes are ever so subtle, and ever so effective! Very nice work! :)
here is an other render for a better lightning
What lies beneath the surface? Maybe it's Nessie?
Cool! I was already wondering whether Nessie would come along... and yes, here she is :) Nicely done!
Thanks! She had to say hi :-)
Nessie?
The Loch Ness Monster: Nessie :)

Hi!!! This is my entry. Underground energy . Hope you like.
My second entry is a slight variation on my first. Still titled "Peeling Away."
2 versions- one is more eroded than the first.
Enjoy! :)
Great improvement! I can easily tell what is going on. Good job!
Yeah, this version is a lot better than the first one, good changes.

I am incredibly intrigued by your process on this one. Is this Freestyle?
Yep
my entry
My Entry is Done!!
This is adorable. Great job!
Thanks!!
pretty cool toby
this is what it looks like with darkened edges and blurred edges:
Waiting on the final render, will probably post this evening or tomorrow.
While the final render is rendering, here's an earlier test render. The final one has a few more tweaks.
The context is how carrots "live" beneath the surface. :)
This is a funny image! I like the texturing, especially the couch.
Thanks. :) I was surprised this morning to find it still rendering! I have the samples setup really high to remove any noise (6000). Not using GPU rendering since some materials are using SSS.
Final,
I think spring has gone underground...
Fun to make a worm.
Final render,
First try at low-poly art
This is really great. I keep finding fun little details hidden in it when I come back to it. :)
"Finding Nessie!" Entry #2. Show some Blender Internal love!
Very odd, if I remove an old post, it just sets the post as "Guest" and removes my name from it.
Another weird thing, it re-attached the image to this post. Can a mod delete this post?
"Casa de los trogloxene". Yucatan cave swallows felling homey.
This is by far the best concept by far great job steve
Had a super busy weekend here, finally managed to find a few hours towards the end to throw something together really quick. May or may not be a metaphor for the direction my life is going right now lol. Kid, waves, shark in Blender. Background and compositing in Photoshop. "Beneath the Deep"
That's funny! I had the exact same Idea. Unfortunately I didn't find time to finish it. Nice one! :)
This is awesome! Im just curious how did you achieve the paint effect? Was it in photoshop or in the compositor?
I was wondering the same thing
Answered above ^
Thanks! Im glad you enjoyed it! The paint effect was actually a happy accident. I had originally planned to do just a very simple flat gradient in the background. But when I started blocking it in I still had one of my painting brushes selected from my last project (I'm working on my digital painting skills concurrently with my Blender ones), and I really liked the effect, so I played around with it a bit more to get what I wanted.
Here's a really simplified version of the compositing, that has all the main components in it. I had about 25 layers in the actual one, mostly for building up transparencies, or masking out effects, and a couple of color balancing layers. And then a couple for really specific details, like the foam on the waves, or for the kid diving I did a motion blur in the direction of his jump and really softly blended that in around him just to give him a bit of directionality.
Hope that answers some of your questions!
Here is my entry. Wasn't able to finish it. Looks better when you open it full size.
maybe a bit more light?
Did you try clicking on it? The preview is a little dark.
Yes, the preview is completely black. But there is a little red pattern on the full size image...
Mine does that to if I am not looking at it at the right angle. It's either that or your screen. The computer I created it on looked darker than it looked on another computer.
Hope it helps
HUG!
The winner is in!
