Weekend Contest: "Beneath the Surface"

What lives underground? Find out in the new BlenderNation weekend contest!
(Image: Daft Snails)

The theme for the next Weekend Contest is inspired by the worms from the previous contest. All those worms live under the ground, and I am wondering what else lives there. So, the topic will be:

"Beneath the Surface"

Of course, feel free to interpret this theme any way you want, you can take it both literally and figuratively. Anything that pops into your mind will do. Just have fun creating those beautiful images!

Post your work below (attach an image and a screenshot if you like), and vote for your winner. The winner will get a post on monday, and will get to pick next weekend’s contest theme. Have fun!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

There ain't but one rule, man: Salute those who about to rock. o/

Uh, oh, wait, sorry--wrong comment section...

  1. Unfortunately I don't think I'll have any time this weekend.. Here is something I made in about an hour (unfortunately I had to cut the rendering time, so it's rather noisy and low resolution)

    Call it "Durin's Bane"

Here's a quicky I whipped up. Cell fracture and a couple particle layers.

I got the feeling this contest's going to be a great one. Shall reserve my voting 'til Sunday.

So, it seems that I am not the only one who has little time this weekend... :P
Anyways, here is my entry. "Peeling Away." This image was the first thing to pop into my head after hearing the theme, so... yeah. This is the product of that thought.

    Comments and critiques appreciated!
    Enjoy!

The image seems very dark and forces the audience to try to figure out what is going on, not good. Interesting perspective, good. I would say lighten the image and make it obvious what you are trying to show!

Thanks for the suggestions! :) I remade it somewhat and posted a new version- it wasn't AS rushed as my first entry, so I think they turned out better.

I had this already made this image to try out Cycels volume.
And the image fits well here.

    "Out of Sight"

When I first heard the prompt I thought of the Ice Berg saying "just the tip of the ice berg" and decided to create this. It has extensive compositing but it was done in blender cycles. Takes about 45 minutes to render at 1000 samples. As usual comments and critiques welcomed!

My suggestion would be to make it clear what is going on, All I see is red swirls and a person with spike arms... It might be underground or something. I love the color scheme also there needs to be a place where the eyes should be drawn. ie the person this can be achieved with lighter image around the person. Hope this helps!

My second entry is a slight variation on my first. Still titled "Peeling Away."
2 versions- one is more eroded than the first.

    Enjoy! :)

While the final render is rendering, here's an earlier test render. The final one has a few more tweaks.
The context is how carrots "live" beneath the surface. :)

Very odd, if I remove an old post, it just sets the post as "Guest" and removes my name from it.

Another weird thing, it re-attached the image to this post. Can a mod delete this post?

  10. Had a super busy weekend here, finally managed to find a few hours towards the end to throw something together really quick. May or may not be a metaphor for the direction my life is going right now lol. Kid, waves, shark in Blender. Background and compositing in Photoshop. "Beneath the Deep"

This is awesome! Im just curious how did you achieve the paint effect? Was it in photoshop or in the compositor?

        • Thanks! Im glad you enjoyed it! The paint effect was actually a happy accident. I had originally planned to do just a very simple flat gradient in the background. But when I started blocking it in I still had one of my painting brushes selected from my last project (I'm working on my digital painting skills concurrently with my Blender ones), and I really liked the effect, so I played around with it a bit more to get what I wanted.

Here's a really simplified version of the compositing, that has all the main components in it. I had about 25 layers in the actual one, mostly for building up transparencies, or masking out effects, and a couple of color balancing layers. And then a couple for really specific details, like the foam on the waves, or for the kid diving I did a motion blur in the direction of his jump and really softly blended that in around him just to give him a bit of directionality.

Hope that answers some of your questions!
