Gooseberry: the Beacon of Hope

2

As we're entering the last week of the Gooseberry campaign, we're still about 1,600 supporters short of the campaign's goal. Ton Roosendaal just posted a message on the Gooseberry blog with a first outlook on his 'plan B'. Are there still 1600 people hiding somewhere waiting for the last few days to press the Pledge Now button?

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

OK, I get the feeling that after donating we seems lost in this project. As it is said, it should be our film too but there so much decision already being made (story, tech improvements) and we could not have voted for them. I read all the gooseberry blog post but still can't see exactly what our role is.
Moreover, I give some advice in order to get more user and more fund but it seems none was heard. But most was interesting and not time consuming (open doge and Ltc wallet so the users that mine can give, get official add on gimp, krita, ardour.. forums).
I'm really sad if gooseberry will not happen but I think I'd just given some constructive feedback for the next time.

The amount of creative/technical decisions that were made are quite minimal but also essential. Otherwise people would have totally no clue what Gooseberry is for. Creative decisions we will have to make by the 1000s still. What we have is less than a bare bone skeleton.
The technical roadmap has been extensively published and reviewed already in september last year. Check code.blender.org.

The way it is "your" film is similar to how Blender is "your own" software too. Can you imagine how even Blender's bookkeeper considers Sintel and ToS to be "her film" too? Every little bit helps, every person in a team is important, but everyone has a role. How to manage this with 1000s of people is a challenge we have to solve still. For sure people can help out practically. You can watch progress, you can discuss it, you can share, you can contribute back, but your role then is more of the intern - which is totally cool, right?

I love dogecoin and all these experiments. But I did not see how that would substantially help us in short term. Contacting websites to add advertisement is a great idea. I have huge long lists, and try to do everything or inspire others to help with it.
