Character Creation in Blender: The Rhino

David Radford offers an extensive tutorial, focusing on character modeling.

David Radford writes:

Here is the first set of tutorials I'm creating on Character Creation using Blender. Part one covers the high resolution model. I chose a model with very little clothing as I wanted to focus primarily on anatomy sculpting of semi-humanoid characters (aka, know your reference). Anyways, without further delay: The series can be found on my website.

I'll be making part 2 as soon as I have time which will cover retopology and baking. I might get into texturing as well but depending on how long the retopology takes I may save the texturing for a 3rd part.

Let me know what you think, if you like it, I'll keep making them.

  1. Excellent tutorials! I have been wanting to get into character creation with modeling/sculpting in Blender and this will help me to learn how. :D

  2. Oh yes please! Would love to see a 2nd and 3rd part. I'm working on a werewolf sculpt at the minute, which I would love to retop and animate evetually. The future of this beast may now rest heavily on the shoulders of your tutorials! :) I've had problems baking sculpted texture to a retoped version in the past so I'd be particularly interested in seeing the texture baking part.

    • Cool man! So far I haven't seen a good anthromorphic werewolf made in Blender. Been thinking about trying it myself as I have been learning modeling/sculpting. Be sure to post some pics, can't wait to see it!

    • lol, I'll try to get this series finished up soon! I don't want to be holding you back now! I've set a personal deadline of May 1st to have Part 2 online. We'll see how much that set will cover, I don't want them to be TOO long so I'm thinking it will likely just cover retopology and possibly baking. If you haven't subscribed to my channel on YouTube go ahead and do that though so when I get the videos up you'll be notified asap! Of course I'll submit it to BN when it gets finished so hopefully it will show up here too.

      • Cool man! I'll definitely subscribe to you on youtube. Btw, quick question, I noticed you are using the BI engine, any special reason for that or is that just what your used to working with? And if I finish my sculpting model, I'll post the pics here on Blendernation and my imgur. :)

        • I'm using BI for the GLSL matcap material. I can't seem to get it to work with Cycles and its just easier to set up in BI anyway. Also, it's only for the sculpting process, if I was to do a beauty render it would be done in Cycles.

          • Oh ok, I noticed that you could set a matcap in Cycles, because thats what I've been using, but it makes sense now. I never tried using a matcap in 2.69, but I must say, it does make modeling easier.

  3. In my opinion, there is a lack of good character creation videos within the blender community, so I am ecstatic to see this! Good work, Dave!

  4. Cool man, Thanks! I've already watched the first 2 parts and have started to try working with them. You made some excellent tutorials. Keep up the good work. :)
