Gooseberry: Adding Sparks and Smoke

Kampoon Monster contributed the Wolf scene to the Gooseberry trailer. In this new article on the Gooseberry blog, they talk about adding the sparks and smoke VFX using the Blender compositor.

Kampoong Monster writes:

In this article we’ll explain how easy to put effects into the shot for this case. We use VSE Mask modifier to mask part of Michel body ( the character ). The idea is to put some sparks behind Michel, and another in front of him.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    • It's not that they totally ruin everything, but I must admit they are a bit creepy. Having said that though, having not seen the movie, I can't (and won't) make a full judgement on that with knowing the full ins and outs of the character. Who's knows, maybe the eyes do fit well, especially knowing that its the same character throughout the movie.

The eyes are really an important part of the story we're telling. They are one of the key thing to recognize the main character through his various character forms. All of this will be made much more clear when we start production !

      • I absolutely agree. The shape might be a bit odd, but it will definitely make it easy to identify the main character (Michel I assume) throughout the movie. It an innovative idea, I like it, and I think it will be an interesting and important dynamic of the movie. And don't let the naysayers get y'all down. The movie is shaping up to be absolutely incredible and I can't wait to see the production stuff on Blender Cloud. :D

    • That seems like a pretty harsh judgement. Can you tell me what you don't like about the eyes? I honestly didn't notice them until you pointed them out. They don't seem too bad for me. What don't you like?

    • I like those eyes. That's exactly how a goats eyes look and they carry a lot of emotion which is really difficult to do, Why does everything 3d always have to be bubbly and cutesy.

  1. Wow didnt expect to create so much riot with just an opinion and be called "naysayer" or "harsh" for that. It seems that people consider useful only comments as "wow" "nice" "awesome" "cant wait" "you rock" because a hard project, with low budget, made by good hearted people, like this can't be criticized even in a simple aspect.
Anyway, it seems that I had an answer on why you don't use pixar style eyes. Thank you. I will wait as the others to make a final opinion about this factor.
Why I said that I don't like those eyes and ruin everything?
    Because IN MY OPINION:
    - those pupils make weird the expressivity of the character, and I consider the expressivity as a primary factor.
    - they look like if they have a lower level of detail than the rest of the character
    - their lighting look inconsistent with the rest of the character, in few words as if they have an own illumination inconsistent with the rest and composited in postpro

    - so much blurred reflections that makes the eyebulb look like if it has a very rough surface
    - they lack a sense of depth or, with different words, they looks like flat textures added in postpro

Hope this time my comment will not be taken as harsh or whatever other bad way because it's not my purpose.
I just say what I think.

I totally understand ! Eyes are and will be a big challenge as all the facial designs for emotions. We also have to recognize the same person through a caterpillar to a wolf. So this will be challenging and you're right, this central for connecting to the emotions of the character. I'm sorry if you feel it doesn't work on this one... I really hope we will do better once we'll start production ! (maybe you can help us on that ;)) (PS : own illumination is often use in Pixar classical eye design isn't it ?)
