Hi Guys,

I want to share my latest work with you all, Hope you enjoy it, like I do. The Goal was to create a low light level picture with Cycles. The result is so amazing that i cannot hesitate to share it with you all.

Thanks for that piece of software. Blender got the best and fastest photo realistic renderer at the moment.

Facts to the Image:

  • CPU calculated. Rendering with 1000 Samples path trace – Top to Bottom - Buckets ( rendering faster?!)
  • RAM usage 7.61 GB of Ram
  • Rendertime on i7 1 hour and 43 minutes
  • Blenderfile Size 371 MB
  • 4.6 Million hairs

Blender was not able to Render more than 1 mio hairs so i create the hairs inside Houdini. import via Obj File.

Same for the curtain. the cloth simulator don't give me the quality i need  with all the extras which are connected to the curtains, hope there will be a working option in the future in Blender, to inter connect all simulations at once.

And one big wish... i read a article about different sampling zones in the digital production 2 years ago. I have to render the front part twice with larger amount of samples to get a less grainy picture. My dream is to draw or select different sampling zones by object or just by painting on the view.

Compositing in Nuke.

  1. Good models, nice composition, really nice hair render but it lacks in many areas. First of all proportions are way off - look at the size of each lamp, the height of chandelier, it all seams so massive and heavy... I would dare to say that it almost looks cartoonish, like a bedroom of a little mouse, lack of space makes it very claustrophobic. Second of all - shaders really need some tweaking. Wall is made from a very strange material (why it blinks so much on the edges, near the floor), it almost seem to be dirty. The ceiling looks like it was made from copper, the blanket on top of the bed feels like bended metal plate. And last but not least - pillows that look nothing like pillows. They are so stiff, so solid that I can't imagine someone would sleep on these babies.

Here's my five cents. And let me just say that I saw your personal site and I was under a great impression seeing your jewerly. Nice job there!

i made this picture from different reference fotos. the wall is golden, and the bed is truly bend metal. and the lamps are like in the real world. its from reference from a 5 star hotel!

      • Really? I would like to see the reference. Sometimes even when you use photo as a reference image you may loose proportions due to different camera lenses.

i got wide angle camera in this scene, you can see it. proportional changes in optics are normal. i cannot show you the reference i got it on disc. but thats not the point. you can believe me i got a similar camera Field of View. its heavy distorted.

  2. Hallo Alexander,
schön mal jemanden aus Dresden hier vertreten zu sehen :)
Okay, but for the discussion itself I keep going in English^^

The subject has the power to impress and also the way you made it is really advanced and awesome work!

Yet on my side, there remain some questions. You made the amount of 4.6 million hairs in Houdini and exported them as "Mesh" (.obj) to Blender?
Could you also please go a little bit more into details about the curtain issues?
What features would you wish to have in Blender Cloth Simulation?

As I got from your Facebook site, you work as a professional artist; does Blender play a role in your professional work, too?

You see, I'm full of curiosity ;)
