Image: White vs Black, by Christopher Cook.
Aliasguru won last weekend's contest with his work 'LeGore', and has the honour of picking this weekend's theme. He settled on 'Black & White'.
Aliasguru writes:
Finally before the addiction of weekend contesting drove me nuts and sent me off in a straight jacket, I managed to be successful. Thanks for hosting these!
Now it's time to desaturate! My choice for the next week is "Black & White". The interpretation of that can be quite wide in my eyes, it could range from replicating old photographs or film scenes, famous actors of the last century to anti-racism campaigns, jury scenes, philosophic interpretations of human thinking,...
Good luck to everyone and Happy Blending!

Awesome! Lets get working :)
How many pictures could you put in this competition?, Let's say I make two pictures, but I can't choose which one of them I should compete with, could I upload two?
sure!
A quick render, this is a diffucult subject btw.
Cool topic!
Here's mine:
Damn! Maybe is my industrial designer self talking louder, but I love this image!! (and that stool too!)
Thanks! You gotta love the Tolix!
Wow! This is gorgeous! How did you achieve such clean elegant shading? Is this freestyle?
I like the way this looks like it almost could've been done by hand! Great work!
Absolutely cool!
True black and white. Other entries are mostly greys.
Thanks everyone for your feedback, this is a cycles render with a single sun lamp (but it could have easily been BI, just using what I'm most familiar with), with the compositor nodes to layer in a freestyle pass. I used the shadow as a basis to invert the freestyle lines, so you have white lines in the shadow and black lines in the light. it was a lot of fun to get this set up.
Here my try!
So I'll be traveling this weekend and didn't have enough time to put a full scene together this week. Went abstract and decided to play around with compositing more this time around (also lots of lofting and arrays). Ended up doing the same image 2 ways, but figured hey, the theme seems to beget binaries so its probably ok. Anyways, here it is I think I'll call this one "Dual Tone Diptych".
looks like I just found a new desktop background! Something mystic is in this work, really like it!
Thanks :D Glad you enjoyed it!
Here's my entry. The time on the clock is my tribute to pi day.
Thats awesome brilliant Idea!!
Thanks!
Heres my entry.
Ying Yang
This is my render, a quick cartoon looking city.

Sure, don't worry about it.
However, please do post your name, just in case you're the winner :)
OK my name is Bryce, i'm new
This is my render a quick cartoon city render.
Nice low-poly work! very crisp and creative! I especially like your use of depth of field in this picture.
Ok, here's my entry. I call it... "Vintage Mafia"! Enjoy!
Comments and critiques welcome! :)
Ok, this one's a bit brighter. I had two versions, and I uploaded the wrong one. Sorry!
Here it is again, but brighter:
Here´s my render, I tried to make an old macro photography of a hair or something. Very grainy and with a lot of contrast
Beautifully executed piece. Great composition, great textures, very good job!
The hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
I'm sorry I didn't mean to post this so many times...

Beautiful piece, and I love seeing the process.
Hey, that is my camera!
This camera use to be my father's one, he bought it in Singapore it was 1975-76 I think. He was a marine officer travelling on the Jeanne Darc Boat at this time and when he bought it, he was travelling arround the world. He gave it to me when I was student and I use it to take some B&W pictures with some Ilford FP4 or HP5+...
Here's another one.
"Cows!" Once without edges and once with edges.
Lots of good entries! Here's my attempt:
I love it, but the DOF is maybe a bit strong.
Here is my submission: Entitled "Connections"
Hello Everyone, Time was limited..but I was able to experiment with a few things I have been wanting to try. Here is my entry, Multiple Planes of Existence.
this is mine.... a black ant looking for a platefull of white sugar block... haha
Yesterday I downloaded the game and it was awesome. "Tribute to Vector"
Lot's of good entries, I really don't have any chance but here's my entry.
This is my entry...It represents the fight between good and evil sides of a person....could have worked more on particles but didn't have time
I was bored so I made this.
I made a short gif loop of some organic matter.

Now that's hypnotic!
That's really cool.
How'd you make it?
With fluid physics, softbody physics, or something else?
No. Much easier: Several Spheres, deformed by a mesh deformer. The deforming mesh has a wave deformer applied.
Oh, that's clever, the end effect is really cool.
It would look cool with a mirror-like surface too.
Thanks for responding!
You*re welcome! It actually has a glossy shader, but the only thing reflected is the light whizzing by. The environment is dark grey.
Created this character from scratch. Hope everyone enjoys this gothic beauty.
Hi, here is my entry. A simple illustration of a decapitated witch punished
for witchcraft.
This is my try. hope you like it :)
The rendering is realistic ! Very nice. The only thing that say to me it is not a picture is that the black keys should be slightly wider.
But... it is interesting for piano beginners, because on a real piano, you never have space enough to put your fingers between those black keys :)
You're right. :)
Is black and white colors? That was the first thing that came to my mind. A question that easily can lead in to an endless debate. I guess it all depends on how you look at it, so I will not try to answer that one. Does it really matter anyway? Give an artist a sheet of white paper and a pencil and art shall be done. Anyway this is my contribution this weekend. Simple it is, but with all the right colors (Or lack of them).
A very nice one!!
Thank you! :)
Gorgeous!
Thank you! :)
hi guys im using blender for about 1 year. When i saw the theme the first thing that came in my mind was racism. Sorry my modelling skills are not very good but at least i tried..
From my memory...
The Fence:
I thought I would try something simple. Lots of great submissions on this topic!
Here is my entry. I tried to go with a simplistic approach to the topic, focusing on light and shadows. There are lots of great entries here!
Sorry for the re-post... I had to center the render and my old post wont go away.
My entry ...
"The door at the edge of the World"
Cycles, but a lot of compositing
I really like how you did the trees on this one :)
I guess I'll toss my hat into the ring :) A little abstract piece for ya
Yin and Yang renderings are so popular here ;)
Hi!!!!! This weekend I prepared "The Loaded Dice". Dice and a special carpet for special evenings. White and Black.
Quick work, and an expensive rendering ....
Hope you like!!
Am I late to the party?
Very nice, simple, clean & elegant! Like the composition & DOF
abstract
this is my first entry here, hope u like it:)
I didn't really feel to do any thing complicated, bec my car just got broken ;( for the third time this month..... But however here is my entry, "An artwork says more then thousand word, but this one tells you only two things" #Black And White - there is no difference#
I will make it better next week x)
My first attempt in this weekend contests. Took me 9 hours to create this. It's still far from perfect and I could tune it up a lot but time is running out - so that is my image for now...
I like the label texture & typography!
Did you sculpt the black&white color on the ground?
Thanks, yes the paint is sculpted :)
Excellent piece. As a painter and a 3D artist I really enjoy this one. :)
Thanks a lot! :)
Made a skyline a few weeks ago as a little exercise in Blender...
This skyline is modeled after a little jpg of some crude oil painting i found.
The blobs of paint where sketchy and I imagined more details and had quite a bit of fun modeling all the buildings.
For this competition i revisited the model and made it a night time scene so a bright white city would contrast with the black night sky.
and here is the actual pic
I like the specularity of the ground! How did you create the small black "lines" within it? It looks too real for a bump map!? Curves with bool modifier? ;)
at the bottom you see the ground plane witch has the ocean modifier. there are bezier curves running over it, i gave them a bevel so they render, and made them black or white emmiting.
Wow seems to be a new record of participants! Heres mine i tried some other things but it didnt work well. So i made this one.
I like the mood! Nice details all over! :)
Thank you :)
I also did this a year ago as kind of new years card. May fit the topic, although it isn't really black and white, but still very monochromatic.

Top News! Here's my entry.
why was my image removed here ?
Hi, this is my first entry here in weekend contest, it is a doodle :)
I went for more of a noire theme with my image
Had to fix the smoke
Had to fix the smoke a little
The plan was that at some point in the process this was going to start looking like Alfred Hitchcock. Still, I only had a few hours to work on it, and this is my first time using blender's sculpting capabilities so I'm pretty happy with the progress. :)
Aaaand now I can't get the tv show's theme song out of my head O_o
Hey folks, sorry for being so late with the results this week! I'm working on a post which will go live after lunch today (GMT+1).
