Skuax writes:

Hi!

I'm really pleased to win this one!

The next subject 'll be .... 'Twice upon a time.'

Hope it will inspire a lot of Blender's fans.

Thanks a lot for your work.

Richard

You heard the man - go for it :)

Post your work below (attach an image), and vote for your winner. The winner will get a post on monday, and will get to pick next weekend’s contest theme. Have fun!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Can you explain a bit more abbout this contest? I really dont understand what is the goal for the subject "Twice upon a time".

    • Um, what the heck? How did you texture those mountains? I have been trying to get a result like this for a long time. Any hints, tutorials?

      • AspiringAnimator on

I think he may have used a texture displacement modifier on a plane... It's how I'm doing a part of my image. Am I correct in this assumption, StealthHawk? By the way, great work!

    • Thank you all for your kind words!
@AspiringAnimator: Yeah, the mountains are modeled/created via displacement (such is the premise behind the ANT landscape add-on, I think?) but that's not how I did the texturing

@Utopia780: Yes, the planet is part of the physical scene in Blender. It was done with gradients and color ramps, mostly.

@John & ssnbee: Do people actually want a tutorial? This was a quickly done scene in <3 hours, So if people are interested I can clean it up a little and make a how-to video :)

      • It was BECAUSE you did it so quickly that I am interested. I can get fairly good results with the ANT addon, but I've had trouble getting enough variation and the right distribution in my textures to get a satisfying result. So even if you're not up for a tutorial, a shot of your node setup and a quick summery would be very cool. (And your planet looks awesome, so you could always throw that in there as a bonus. :) )

    • Okay everyone, this is the image in the process of being cleaned up for the tutorial. Are there any suggestions before I start making the tutorial? Missing elements? Written v. video tutorial? Let me know, thx! btw I don't really know how long it will take me to do the tutorial (being my first one) so stay posted ;)

      • Well, my only suggestion is if you go with video- don't make it too drawn out. Come up with what you're going to say, and stick with it. A lot of people like text tutorials for just this reason- it summarizes the most important part. Good luck! Crafting your first tutorial is a helpful learning experience for the creator, as well as the audience.

P.S. What happened to your white balance in this image? It seems too red/pink.

        • thx for the catch, I guess I just didn't see the gradual change lol. But you're 100% right. I'll be sure to restore the balance in my final render.

      • Vincent Holzborn on

Great, thanks for the offer! I mostly like written tutorials with a lot of pics, because you can easily jump to the point that is interisting and rebuild it in an own scene. What I reaaly like to know is how you made the texture. But that is only my 2 cents.

  2. I have an idea but I'm not an artist, just playing around with blender. And I'm not fast enough too :)
But for those who needs a hint:
Here in Flanders-Belgium we have a saying: "A donkey never bumps twice to the same stone!". And following this saying, in Europe we had WW 1 and WW 2, so twice upon a time. And by this I mean also "do people never learn?". You don't even have to open a newspaper to see what is happening in the world because it is always on the cover.
So if you can use this, feel free to use the idea of the 2 great world wars.

  3. Here is my entry, "Variation on Starry Night." I was working on creating a village with clock towers and was trying to come up with a background for the scene. After seeing the theme, I thought of Van Goh's "Starry Night" for some reason. So I put it in as the background and traced the stars and moon to give them a glow that would make them pop out.

    Comments and critiques appreciated! Enjoy!

      If you know/watch Doctor Who...
This looks like something that would hang on the door of the TARDIS. I like it! Very creative!

  6. I dont have much time this Weekend but i wanted to take Part. So heres my Entry. My assoisation with that Machine and the Theme is that it was invented twice. So Twice upon a time. The first Inventor was Charles Cros, but as Edison had the money to get a patent on his Phonograph, he made also the money. I dont know why i choosed Edisons machine as he was a two faced person. That hes not the real Founder of the Light bulb is another Story hehe.

Ok here it is. Not the best one but it has some mood i think

    • Hey! Good to see your back! I really like this one. Didn't know about that lightbulb thing. Always believed that came from an Edison "Ahaa!" moment, turns out to be a lot more complicated indeed. :)

      • Hey Thomas :) Yeah the Story behind all this is really intersting.
I hope to be on the Contest more often. Cant wait for the next weekend.

        • History can be fascinating! :) Glad to hear, I like your creations. My mind also went to those of simultaneous inventions. I was thinking about the automobile, but then I understood the gasoline car probably were invented a lot more than two times and so I abandoned the whole Idea. I also fell short of time this weekend. Guess I'll give it a go next time. :)

  7. Here is my entry for the Weekend Contest.....

Once upon a time there was NaN. Twice upon a time there was Blender. It lived happily ever after!!!

  8. Sorry for posting this twice. I wanted to upload a higher resolution image and somehow the other post changed to "Guest" and I can't delete it. Maybe Bart can delete my other duplicate post. Thanks.

I had this idea at the last minute, hopefully you guys will still see it :)
    Old paper texture from wildtextures.com.
    Enjoy!

  10. So I was swamped with other obligations this weekend, and my concept was going nowhere, very slowly, but as I'm making a concerted effort to enter every week here, I wanted to enter something lest I fall out of the habit, so feel free to ignore this, but this is just one model that I kind of liked from my scene.
