Godot Game Engine Goes Open Source

Previously an in-house game engine solution, Godot seems a powerful game development environment. It deploys to several platforms such as Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, iOS, BB10 and HTML5. The team has fully open sourced it under an MIT license.

From their website:

Godot Engine has been developed as an in-house engine with a track-record of more than a decade of published games. It took a long time but it’s finally ready for everyone. Godot brings to the table a large array of features and a different approach to making games, which combined allow single developers and teams to be more efficient than ever.

The Engine

Godot is a fully featured, open source, MIT licensed, game engine. It focuses on having great tools, and a visual oriented workflow that can export to PC, Mobile and Web platforms with no hassle. The editor, language and APIs are feature rich, yet simple to learn, allowing you to become productive in a matter of hours.

Godot is BETA. Collaborate!!

Having been developed as in-house means that the user experience may still not be ideal for everyone. The features needed to make a great game are there, but we really need your help to fix all the rough edges and improve usability (via feedback and/or code contributions). We know we are close to having an awesome, open source, game engine with nothing to envy from the best commercial offerings, but we can’t do this alone. This is why Godot is now open source, so everyone can help us reach this goal.

I'm very curious how compatible this tool is with Blender. Is anyone up for a quick test and/or tutorial?

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I have been waiting for something like this to come out. Awesome Awesome!!! I'm going to play with this none stop Thank you Godot .=)

  2. I've downloaded this and it seems very good. 3d model imports rely on *.dae files. The interface is good and it runs on linux which makes me happy.

    • Hey! I've downloaded the file from Linux X11, 64 Bits, but I have no idea what to do with the godot_x11.64 file! Could you please help me out to test it on my Ubuntu 12.04 (64bits)? I don't really want to use Windows.

        • Thanks a lot for helping me! This is what I've done: Right click on the file, chose properties, went to permissions tab and checked the "Allow executing file as program" box. Now I double click on the file, but nothing happens. (I don't if what I did was what you were suggesting me to do)

          • I don't know why. I've Ubuntu 13.10 64bit and it works.
            Try to launch via terminal.
Press CTRL+ALT+T and go in the directory of of godot.
            Type ./godot_file_name
            Do it an error message?

          • I tryed via terminal, got this error: Segmentation fault, So I downloaded the file again, set the file executable as you said, and voila! It worked! Thank you so much!

  3. The website gave a Norton Malicious warning. Is this site safe? Is the code safe? I am not sure if I was getting a false positive or if this site is really unsafe.

    • Norton might have based the warning solely on it being a file that hasn't been downloaded many times. If so, it'll mention that in the alert. Not sure if you have to click a "more details" thing for that info, since I only used them briefly with a new computer that had it pre-installed(not my own computer, I built mine myself).
