Cycles Standalone Renderer

9

standalone

Thomas Dinges is working on a standalone version of the Cycles renderer. The current version is still very simple, but it paves the way for integration of Cycles in to other 3D apps.

Thomas Dinges writes:

Cycles is nicely integrated into Blender, but can also be build as a standalone renderer. The standalone application can be used for testing purposes but also allows an integration into other 3D programs.

The code is still experimental and the application is quite simplistic, but it can already be used and also works with features such as OSL or GPU rendering (if compiled with those features).

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I wonder if having standalone Cycles could in any way aid the problem of running separate frames on separate GPUs. Last time I tried - it saved lots of render power - l ike 2x the speed for 3 gpus, but there are some reasons it's crashing after few frames. I guess preparation of frame fights for temporary files...

  2. may i suggest something in the realms of a more real-time based direction? could port the game engine...As im just about to dive into a 780 i was hoping to get some epic speeds out of it.

Is also a manner of make advertising of Blender. Certainly it will get the attention of many people to Blender.

  4. I'm not sure if this is possible, but a standalone cycles render would be the perfect candidate to include any type of renderfarm code. It would be great a cycles ready to "farm" without the full Blender installation.

  5. If a standalone version of Cycles gets momentum "I hope it does" it will further highlight the advantage of the more permissive licenses over the more viral licenses like GPL. It often makes me wonder what the future is for GPL.

I really want to try this out. Since rendering from the command line results in faster rendertimes, I'm wondering if the standalone would also be more efficient due to lower overhead.
