Drones, Photogrammetry and Blender

2

This video is a combination of Lidar data that was collected by a drone, reconstructed (with other software) and finally visualized in Blender. I'm stunned by the accuracy of the geometry that was captured this way!

Kris Nackaerts writes:

I'm a remote sensing researcher at VITO (Vision on Technology) and work on photogrammetry and the use of drones. As a hobby I do use Blender and finally was able to combine work and hobby. The goal of the project was to check to what accuracy we could map volumes of sand and gravel heaps. For this you fly over the study area with a nadir looking camera, take overlapping images, let photogrammetry do its magic and you end up with a nice textured 3D model. To add some extra for the client, I imported this in Blender, added a flag with logo's, played with depth of field, added some poles to indicate ground control point locations and done.

My first trial can be seen here:

Data structure is visualized and the flight corresponds to the actual drone flight (small helicopter) except for takeoff and landing.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
