This Week: Testing Disqus Comments

189

I'm giving the Disqus commenting system another try this week. I have a love/hate relationship with the default WordPress commenting system, and am curious if Disqus is going to make conversations and moderation any easier. The biggest attractors for me are ease of management, and the opportunity for everyone to post images in their comments (like for a weekend contest ;-). I've used Disqus in the past, but returned to WordPress when I ran in to some issues - hopefully these are fixed now. What do you think? Do you like this system, or do you prefer traditional WordPress commenting?

Update: I've seen an overwhelmingly positive response to this week's test. Yes, there are some issues with Disqus but then again this is true for most solutions. I've seen the conversation rate go up which is the most important indicator for me that it's a better tool for supporting discussions. I'll keep Disqus on the site!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I refreshed the page after writing a comment and was like, "Whoa, did the commenting system just change?"

Yeah, I think many of us have a love/hate relationship with Disqus. As someone who puts great effort into spelling, I love that it allows me to make corrections, but as someone who values parsing, I hate how it jacks up my careful parsing at times.

But hey, I personally think it's worth a shot again. Let's see how it goes this time.

    • The commenting is a good point. I've tried that a number of times with the WordPress commenting system, but editing plugins always seemed to clash with the caching systems I use. This would cause users to be able to edit each other's comments etc - nasty stuff!

I'm not sure what you're saying about parsing though, care to explain that some more?

      • Sure. I comment quite frequently with Disqus and sometimes, if I'm using structured paragraphs, after hitting the Post button, sometimes it'll turn my careful effort at parsing like this:

        Into something like this:

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do
eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad
        minim

        veniam, quis nostrud exercitation
        ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip
ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in
voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur
sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt
        mollit anim id est laborum."

I don't know why this happens at times. Doesn't happen every time, just at random moments, though I do notice this does occur at times when I'm copying and pasting into the comment section.

I can just go back and backspace to correct them, but sometimes, it's just a big headache. But hey, at least it's correctable.

  2. Testing.. I want to see if it lets you edit your comments.
    Hooray, it does :D

I like the up/down votes feature as well, that might have made finding good posts easer in the UI wars :P
Nice, it updates real time :)
Excellent, it also lets you collapse those big reply trains to save space, and delete your posts.

    So far, I like it.

With the old system, I could do italic markup, but not bold. What will this allow? Can I escape <html> tags?

  4. You will certainly get more voices!! Signup for blendernation or any individual websites seems difficult (hindrance) nowadays. The best thing is you get a centralized notifications from disqus.
    Glad its back!!!

  5. yes, images preferable.
But it is on another server, that means, your stuff may not opened some day.
Or another situation, you may be banned for reason of government safety or something.
Anyway, it makes wider users circles.

  6. Every website should use this! Was really disappointed when you reverted back to WP commenting system crap so that I didn't visited the website for months, anyway, now I'm back since it's nice to be able to comment and follow discussions :D

  7. I'm having a problem with Caps, both with Disqus and now the 'new' YouTube. A - when typed is also highlighted and if I don't stop and space once with an arrow vs space bar, it deletes everything. C - cursor disappears and moves to the bottom of the comments. B fine, D fine, E F G H I J K L M N, fine - O - Like A Only O highlights the entire comment section I am typing (A only goes back to the start of the sentence) and if I do not arrow once - the whole post is gone. P- highlights just below the discus box and the icon just below here to the left side of where it reads post as your name. Q - highlights itself, R S - just like P, T U V - fine, W - just like C, X - same as Q, Z - fine. Not new this problem, and I usually just write them elsewhere, copy/paste and done. Now that YouTube is doing the same thing, I'm bongled in the brain.

    • Should have done the basic check. Using iMac - (latest version) - with Chrome as my browser. Using Safari, all works just perfectly, of course. Chrome/Mac issue apparently. How nice.

        • I am actually replying on Windows 8, via Chrome and I am having the exact same issue. It must be an extension - (don't have many), so will spend some disabling time and see where that leads. Not sure if VI emulation is present, where do I find that little answer? Thanks!

  8. I just hate this down/up vote thing, we are not going to have competitions here... at least it shouldn't have that down vote button... we don't see much harsh/spam here so the only thing that the down vote button does is that it makes some people disappointed from their comments...so they will never leave a comment again...

    • Let me down vote that... Just kidding ;-) You're right, a down vote could lead to a more negative sentiment in some discussions. However, so far I haven't seen any abuse of it yet, and people are primarily using up voting to 'like' comments.

Down voting is available only to registered members though, maybe that helps a little.

    • I think it can be useful for putting useful/good comments nearer the top, so people don't have to scroll through and read everything

  9. I personally much prefer Disqus to WordPress, simply because it allows me to link it to my Google+ account (I hated having to log in to WP just to post a comment, it's much easier with Disqus ;). Also editing and upvoting comments, posting images, and HTML formatting.

    My two cents.

  10. Is there way to get a non-threaded view with new comments at the top or to high-light new comment since your last visit to a page?

  11. I love only having to sign into one account to comment on multiple sites that use Disqus. Having to register just to comment is a hassle.

  12. Disqus doesn't appear to work well with Opera Mini. I think I read somewhere that Opera Mini disables Javascript which Disqus relies on. (Then again, I'm not sure how well WordPress worked either - I never tried it).

  13. Bottom line is you have to go with what works for you. I've seen Disqus in action, but have never really used it until now. It seems alright to me. I've been considering using a wordpress plugin to allow readers to leave comments via Facebook, since practically everyone has a FB account. I'm still unsure of the potential headaches. I'll look into Disqus in the meantime.

  15. Really, I think many of us have a love/hate connection with Disqus. As someone who places excellent attempt into punctuation, I really like that it allows me to create improvements, but as someone who principles parsing, I dislike how it ports up my cautious parsing at periods.
