Bart Veldhuizen
I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Never knew you could expand selection type. . . very nice. Should have seen the pop-up hint that tells you that, but never imagined it.
Thanks
There’s more to the CTRL-TAB popup menu: press 1, 2 or 3 to switch to vertex, edge or face select mode. Or press shift-1, shift-2 or shift-3 to independently toggle vertex, edge and face selection modes.
Woah.. I learned so many new things in that 46 seconds.. Thanks!
There is a faster way using this script (Multiselect Menu): http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?223395-Multiselect-Menu
