Ivy Generator: How to Create Ivy with Blender

blender ivy generator

Learn how to use the IvyGen add-on in this tutorial by Filippo Veniero.

Filippo writes:

Vegetation and plants can turn a flat image into a successful work, but created by hand, realistic ivy can become a nightmare even for an expert 3D artist. Luckily, we can use a Blender plug-in: IvyGen. This plug-in implements a procedural system that produces realistic ivy on our mesh. It's free and very easy to use, you can use it in Blender or as standalone software, and it is available here. You'll find a standalone version for Linux, MacOS and Windows and a lot of good textures. This isn't a biological simulation of growing ivy but it produces complex and convincing vegetation.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I take the opportunity of this article to give a comment on the original IVY program and it's blender addon clone.
As you can see on the topmost pic, there's a big part of the ivy without leaves. Ok it's nice, good realistic, blah blah blah... but those who want leaves in this place seem to have no possibility to do it. :-( wich is quite annoying.
So i gave a try at writing some very few python lines, changing the blender addon so that the presence of leaves in the lower part of the plant becomes a parameter.
I put the script on BA forum.
For those curious of the thing, here's the link:

Note that my expertise at writing python is just 10 long ;-) so please be kind if you find some big noob mistake :P

Have fun with this ivy-with-more-leaves addon and happy blending all :)
