Cicero Moraes uses Blender to for forensic facial reconstruction (I have mentioned him before). He now reports on a scientific presentation where he promotes the use of Free software.

Cicero writes:

In this post I tell a little about my participation in the III Meeting of Forensic Anthropology and Forensic Dentistry, which took place at the Faculty of Dentistry of University of São Paulo (FOUSP).

I had the chance to lecture, teach a course in Forensic Facial Reconstruction with Blender and Free Software, and finally present scientific panels with research partners. All panels were made with the help of Blender and one of them was awarded first place as it featured most relevant research work.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. It is not outside art.

It is art. It happens to be also science :)

The border between art and science is blurry.

Both disciplines require a keen sense of observation. At least this is true of real good artists. And even more so of real good scientists.
