Auto Tile Size Addon

Greg Zaal presents an add-on that automates the selection of proper tile sizes for your renders.

Greg writes:

Tile sizes can be confusing and for some reason they actually make a big difference in render speed! But why bother to figure it out when you can have a simple addon do it all for you?! This add-on takes care of that. Just enable it and you should never need to worry about tile sizes again!
It automatically calculates the best size when you change the resolution, or when you change from CPU to GPU and back, or accidentally change the tile size yourself! (although if you do want to set it manually, simply toggle the Auto Tile Size button).

Tried it with different renders and both in auto mode and static (64×64, 128×128, 256×256 etc.)
It speeded up my renders with approx. 10%.

this should enable by default for 2.69

2.69 is in feature-freeze at the moment, release pending so bug fixes only at this point – though I’ll see what the devs say for 2.70 :)
Gives me time to have it work for Blender Internal, handle smaller sizes (in case there are more available threads than tiles) and work for border renders!
