Video Retouching with Blender

8

This video made my day! Sebastian König needed to replace a photograph in a piece of video footage.

Sebastian writes:

Here's a little breakdown of a small FX project that I recently did for the German TV Station MDR. They needed to have a photo exchanged in one shot from a documentary about Roland Freisler.

Kay Dombrowsky from trickkiste.tv was doing the color grading for the whole series on his DaVinciResolve, and since we share the same office space he asked me to do this little shot.

Everything was done in Blender. First I did a quick 2 point track of the original photo. I combined that with a few hooks, which I then hand animated to get the deformation of the photo right. Masking and fake shadows were done in Blender's MovieClipEditor. Feathering could be better at some points, but for the time and budget I think all in all it turned out pretty good.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. That's pretty cool.

It reminds of what they did in "House" when a character died in the show. They didn't want to spoil the season finale but they had to record a scene in a graveyard where a picture of the character was over his grave.

The solution was to shoot with a fake picture and replace in post :)
    * source: I don't know, but I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere

I totally agree. David ward's tutorials have been extremely helpful to me. All the way from modelling cartoon characters, rigging, and animation. His series of tutorials in modelling, rigging and animating of Tim was excellent.
