I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Very nice work! I remember seeing some of those on the 11 second club. When did you get started with that?

  2. It is very good work, but just to point out, most of the work was done in Maya. I think I see some animations from Plumiferos, but the rest seems to be almost exclusively AM.

    • There is nothing from Plumiferos. The first bird shot is from an Icelandic TV commercial (done in Blender), the second is the bird from BBB and was Hjalti's 11 second club entry (it won, by the way)

One of the AM shots (the tranquilizer gun) was done in Blender using the CG Cookie FlexRig. Hjalti was a very valuable beta tester as we built that rig.

There are several shots done in Maya, but that's beside the point. Hjalti is an animator first and a Blender user second. If you wish to get anywhere with your art, you should adopt a similar attitude.

  3. Pure genius! Another hit for Blender and the talented people who devote their time to making it great. Another feather in the cap for open source and the artists who shine because of it.

  4. I can't help but keep wondering Beorn, how great it would be if you and Hjalti did an online course somewhere for intermediate animators. This course would be for people who have read Richard Williams' book. People who have watched your animation fundamentals and animation toolkit dvd's. People who have seen Bassam's and William Reynish's videos from a few years back. We know the concepts. But we need clinical feedback from a mentor. Something like: 4 weekends long for $500 US dollars. Two podcasts a week and a weekly assignment. For example, Blocking, Splining, and Polishing a physical animation like "run and climb over a wall." Then post our work on Blender Artists for clinical peer critique. And then finally, your critique (perhaps of just the top five). I am sure there are many people globally, who are at this level, have watched your first two dvd's, and need this at this moment. As you mentioned in the podcast with Andrew, The Blender community could use it, We need that mentorship and we need that peer critiquing process. Plus, in all honesty, between yourself and Hjalti, there is a wealth of knowledge and talent that will really lift everyone in the class. Would you please consider that?
