How Animation is made - Oranguerrilla

18

Oranguerrilla is Turi Scandurra's student film for the Master of Fine Arts in Animation and Special Effects at Academy of Art University, San Francisco. It uses a combination of hand-drawn and 3D animation, and uses Blender to tie it all together.

In this video, Turi talks about the creation of his movie - I highly recommend you spend the 10 minutes to watch this one!

Turi writes:

Making Of video for Turi Scandurra's animated film Oranguerrilla, done by mixing traditional 2D animation done with pencil and paper, and an extensive use of digital tools and compositing in a 3D environment.

The backstage shows the work of two and a half years necessary to manage all the production steps, from the early sketches to character design and from the construction of the drawings to special effects and digital compositing.

The short film tells the story of how two kids, who to take care of an orange grove, fight an evil mechanical juicer, symbol of what was once useful to the community but is now rusty and inefficient.

The film is an allegory that suggests how the work of young citizens is a strong antidote to the corruption of a nation.

  1. Hi, Turi!
Thanks a lot! This story is very very inspiring for all young and advanced artists. You've proved that even one man can do a lot within an animation pipeline!
I've add your video to my bookmarks on YouTube because I've found it helpful and very interesting!

  2. This is way cool! I would really like to see a tutorial on how to composite 2D animation into a 3D world.... If anyone knows of any. ;)

  3. Hi Turi, your idea and this short making of Oranguerrilla is very much inspirational. Thank you for sharing the same and hope you can make a tutorial of how you have integrated 2D with 3D in your production which will be helpful for young budding artists.

  4. Turi, your animation is beautiful!

And I was very excited to see GNU/Linux in the end credits, rather than just the name of the kernel! It gave me such joy to see evidence that you value freedom, tears were brought to my eyes.
