Game Development with Blender

31

BookCover-440x550More great news for Game Engine lovers (in addition to the Blender Roadmap): Blender community veterans Mike Pan and Dalai Felinto are announcing a new book on the Blender Game Engine.

Mike and Dalai write:

We start covering the basics of Blender for new comers followed by a simple game project from start to end. That should give the reader the perspective of the components of the Blender game engine important for making your own projects.

The following chapters are self-contained, each one with its own approach. Most of them have tutorials and short projects focused on the presented tools. Finally, chapter 10 gives the reader a perspective of real usage of the Blender game engine presenting 10 projects from different artists around the world explained by the authors themselves.

The book is on pre-sale now for $26.56 (regular price $44.99).

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    • I hope no one buys the book for its pretty cover alone ;)

But misleading? I don't know. Xbox controller for PC is the number one joystick used by indie games and PC gamers in general. And the first (and last) line of the back cover (or the book description for online buyer) explicitly explain that the book is about the Blender game engine.

      cheers

        But "will it blend!" :)

I'm not used to the Xbox design where the analog sticks are so far apart. I've only used the dualshock design where they are lined up horizontally. But I've heard that the staggered design plays better.

      • It was very misleading, at least for me.

I read the title, saw the xbox controller, and thought it was about making xbox games.

If you know what an xbox controller looks like, I can't imagine not associating the book with an xbox.

So they should have put a Logitech controller in the BLENDER instead, and changed the title to "Game development with BLENDER, footnote, games which cannot be played on an Xbox, only on a PC with a game controller by one of the many companies including but not limited to Microsoft"... just glad the publisher doesn't charge by the letter for titles.

          • Yeah, that's a good point. You probably shouldn't put any picture that needs to be clarified with a long footnote.

    • A digital version will be available around 2 weeks from today.
That and more information about the book (including a sample chapter in pdf) in the link above

      • I've already purchasd the paperback but will I receive a free PDF version too? I will I have to pay agaiin?

I prefer too read the PDF versions on my Android tablet.

        • Hi BigPilot, I never bought an ebook from Amazon.com so I can't tell you for sure. But I don't think it's common to send ebooks when you buy paperback versions of the book.

I recommend you to contact Amazon directly and explain your situation. The fact that you bought it in the pre-sale period before knowing an ebook version would be out may be enough for them to justify cancelling your shipment.

(but do it sooner than later)

If everything else fails, donates the paperback copy to a local library or school, and at least make more people happy.

          Sorry about the inconvenience.

    • i agree is a must-buy, i would buy this one but i already have it and no cost for me hehe :)

anyway i know several people are gonna buy it "Congratulations"

Err.. excuse me! This is actually an interesting subject.. however, can we have a video tutorial instead of this awesome book? how can I read a book 2x speed ? :)

      • DolphinDream on

Bird Dog .. what a fascinating creature ;) Btw, Data would read 100x :) Ideally I would do the "matrix" trick and "download" the program directly into my brain and learn "kung-fu" in 5 minutes.. and perhaps I can learn blender game engine in 5 seconds :)

    • Well, a video tutorial works very well in many cases, especially if one is explaining a technique like retopo or sculpting or modelling. But for the purpose of the book, I think a written format works well too. It's much more glanceable and searchable(for the eVersion, at least).

Of course, I might be biased since I wrote the book :)

    • Hi, it will be in some bookstores and definitively in the book stands at related events (Siggraph, ...).

But to have it available in your local bookstore the easiest way is to go there and ask for the book. The book store can then contact the publisher and make sure they have a copy at your reach.

As a bonus they tend to order at least another copy to see if there are more people interested, so it's a nice way to promote the book. (and you can skim the book properly before committing to buy it).

    • The same happens in other stores (e.g., Amazon.ca). It takes some time for Amazon to flush the updates to all of their databases (or each site has its own system - I don't even know).

That happened because we changed the book title during the production but the "working title" was already spread to Amazon systems. Thanks for reporting that though (in fact you can click on "update product info" and report that to Amazon.co.uk)

  2. Smiling to myself, so glad I pre-ordered it a while back....

Hopefully this will fill the void as regards to Blender Game Engine tutorials!

  3. For anyone wondering why Amazon still states that the book is not out, this is normal. Yesterday is when the book was leaving the publisher warehouse. I think the only books that are shipped in the same day they are released are the kinds of Harry Potters, Game of Thrones, ...

    > Hopefully this will fill the void as regards to Blender Game Engine tutorials!
    So do we :)

The "Look Inside" feature on Amazon.* should be up any soon as well.
    Thanks everyone for the support

    • >The “Look Inside” feature on Amazon.* should be up any soon as well.

Thanks! That what I want .

      Hopefully good book!!!!

  4. And the kindle version is out as well (for USA at first, in Canada at least is not working yet), I will let Bart post the link, so he can use Blendernation referee code ;)

    Bought it through Blendernation!
I've been using Blender a lot for work (laboratory testing visualizations, rapid prototyping). This is an awesome way to use BGE. I can use it for GUIs, optimizing large ammounts of data that people can read, graphical presentations, prototyping, medical device simulations, etc. Now if we could only have BGE interact with test equipment as with labview...hmm.
This piece of software could do a LOT more than just gaming. I just make the games to know how to use it better. Can't complain with that I guess.
