Early Morning Breakfast

Blender Guru's Andrew Price presents a new video tutorial (and great image!) on the creation of a realistic bread model.

Andrew writes:

I always found food to be a rather baffling topic, so I decided to delve straight in and attempt to make realistic bread.

I photographed the bread textures myself, then modelled, textured, and lit the scene using Blender and rendered it with Cycles. Minor post processing with Magic Bullet Looks.

I also made a tutorial here.

In this tutorial you will discover:

  • How to use the new subsurface scattering feature
  • How to model and texture realistic food
  • Why Displacement and Normal maps are awesome

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. very good tutorial Andrew, thank you very much... the image of the loaf of bread is very tasty!
it's very cool to demonstrate the interaction between the displacement map and the projection of normal maps.
I wondered if it was possible to do bake with cycles. this is not possible, is it?

  2. Very nice! We took a loaf of bread from the kitchen and found only a few flaws.
—The crust looks a little too light, slightly undercooked.
—The ridges on the top crust should be sharper.

  3. That photo is realistic enough to eat. I love the detail, like on the top right of the bread slice you can see a serrated knife edge smeared against it.

  4. Saweet! I'm in the middle of a children's book project and need to render some more food. I managed to get some pretty good looking fruit, but wanted to add in some nice looking bread but was hesitant. Will definitely take a look at this. Thanks for the tut, Andrew!

  5. What is reflected on the grip of the fork? Is that supposed to be the jar of jam?

Also, the butter knife looks like it should have teetered off the plate. It's base looks heavy and it's extending way out.
