Developer Meeting Notes, June 2, 2013

blender_logo_shinyIt looks like a rather quiet meeting went on yesterday. The discuttion point I'm excited about is the upcoming 'über shader'!

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Hi all,

Here are notes from today's meeting in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders

1) Next release targets

  • Blender 2.67b was released last week, luckily no 'c' is going to be made :)
  • Cycles 'über shader': Brecht van Lommel mostly works on UI (restructure) code for it now. You will get nodes with like 30 inputs and properties, which needs to be presented well in properties editor and node editor.
  • Bastien Montagne will have patch soon to RNA-ify the 'editor menu' (to set editor types), so its in Python and translation control.
  • OpenEXR 2.0 migration progress for Windows mostly done, other platforms still WIP.
  • No further news on the other targets.

2) Other projects

  • Technical topic: Sergey Sharybin was investigating if libz can be static linked for Windows, needs someone to check Mingw as well.

3) GSoC

  • Students: add your Google proposal in wiki!
  • Students: don't forget filling in enrollment and tax forms for Google.
  • It's still "community bonding" period for 2 weeks, feel welcome to hook up with mentor and the rest here on the list or in irc.

Thanks,

-Ton-

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I know its cheeky and not the correct area, BUT

Can someone add a patch so the properties window comes up in the center of the screen?

    I'm gonna hide now.... :)

    • You want a patch for that?

If I get you right, you could also just save your UserPreferences, with the 3d view replaced by the properties window and vice versa?!

If this was supposed to be a joke, sry - meanwhile I might be taking those requests too seriously ;)

      @Topic: Thank you, devs!

  2. I am very excited about the Ubershader!

I hope the way it is presented in the properties panel is a little bit the same as with blender internal render materials panel.
Offcourse not 100% the same, but I would like that you can collapse the parts that you don't use for a certain material. So lets say you just want to use only the diffuse and glossy 'parts', it would be nice if you can collapse all the other ones you dont need so they dont distract you.

This would also - at least I think - make it easier for people who are new to Cycles ( and Blender ) because they dont need to 'fight' with the node editor. ( Offcourse after using it for a while it's not that hard, but at the start it can be pretty though ( and some newbies might give up. ))

Also, is there any chance that the Ubershader will have a funciton that allows to have an object recieve shadows and reflections only ( but the object it self aint visible )? This one thing I am really missing in Cycles.....
