15

3D file embedding service Sketchfab have launched a new service that allows you to build rather nice interactive 3D portfolios. To celebrate the launch, they're giving away three yearly licenses. Read on to find out how to win one!

Sketchfab founder Alban Denoyel writes:

We just released sketchfab.me, the first (ever!) service to create a professional 3D portfolio website, powered by Sketchfab! Here is an example: karolmiklas.sketchfab.me

It offers a slick and responsive interface to showcase your models, with easy setup from your Sketchfab dashboard, and it's free for students. It also comes with a new addition: an image-based fallback which automatically generates a 360° view of your models when WebGL isn't available.

The service will be free for students, and from less than $6/month for other people.

Win a free yearly license

To win a yearly license, open a free account and upload your best model. Leave a link in the comments below. The Sketchfab team will pick the three winners this Friday.

Enjoy! :)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I started using Sketchfab about a year ago after several failed or mediocre attempts at rolling my own. It's a great service. I'm always a little shocked that some of these 200k+ poly models will display on my POS laptop.
Does the model need to be a brand-new one? This was my first, so it's my favorite. http://skfb.ly/kjf0ba (Fair warning, this model is somewhat graphic, in a medical sense.)

Been trying to upload for 2 hours…

the blender exporter just say error, no more info anywhere.. not even in the info panel

obj and 3ds files fail textures or gives error when uploading as zip.

to find the api key… i just guesses is the console icon in the dashboard… still not sure if that is right.. as there is no letters that indicate that…

any step by step guide ?

this is the model, please try it yourself :

also , there is no support on the web, nor any contact or forum…

not so good experience so far..

    • Hi Giorgio,

We are sorry you couldn't get the result you expected. Can you be more specific on the error you get from the exporter? You don't need it to upload, you can upload directly your .blend file on Sketchfab, the exporter just eases the process.

As for uploading an obj, you need to make sure you zipped it with its .mtl and textures in jpg or png format.

Our regular contact address is [email protected], feel free to reach out any time if you have additional questions, and we'll look at the file you sent via dropbox.

      Best,

      Sketchfab
