Space Oddity 2 - Fake Trailer

A little more than two years ago, I started learning 3D thanks to Blender with a project in mind. The project is dead but I kept learning. Two months after starting, I did an animation called Space Oddity, my very first (-second-) attempt at doing a 3D short (somewhere on my channel). Two years later, I thought it'd be cool to go back to space and tell an other story, with new things I've learned so far. The "trailer" is everything, there's no real S-O 2 coming.
Done in Blender (+ Gimp) , rendered with blender's internal rendering engine.

The soundtrack uses Michael Giacchino's music, and movie lines.

If interested, you can find a few images and concepts on my Deviantart gallery.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. It's a Real trailer! I guess it would only be a fake trailer if it had a black screen. Well it's kind sad it won't actually be a movie, but I understand :)

  2. Awesome mood all the way through. Was the music scored to fit the trailer or was the trailer edited to fit the music? Really loved everything exept the voice acting to be honest. Think it would have been more scarry without the words, more Kubrick-like, sugestiv instence horror. Silence is really scarry.

    Another outstanding peice of work!

I vote Tom Walks for director of the next open movie:) seriously you have a great sense for timing and atmosphere, it would be epic I'm sure!

Seeking your perspective here as the person who made the work.

A lot of stuff gets said about how the "internal" Blender render engine is more difficult to work with to get texture and lighting results such as this. Would you like to give your perspective on Internal vs Cycles?

Two years of learning plus a great deal of prior artistic experience brought to the table as well. The artist makes the art. Tutorials alone don't teach those elements of skill and judgment.

  5. OK, 1st off, this is a rant, BUT a positive one. I get so tired of all these super awesome guys who have all this talent, and they're not directing the next big movie or something. My theory is that he's really good and probably a nice guy. So PLEASE let him direct the next open source movie. Each of the directors were fabulous and unique, and I think his style is also. Especially if its drama-based. Good tense action. I could watch another hour of this.*

    • I'll second him directing the movie, but someone else should write the script. As good as Space Oddity 2 is in terms of direction, photography and CGI I believe the script is poor and predictable.

There is no script, nor is there going to be a script. There isn't even a plot summary or synopsis, nor even an outline. Only an initial premise. And all beliefs aside, I don't see how something that does not even exist can be judged qualitatively. Give this trailer to three different writers and you will get three different scripts incorporating the setup of the general premise.

  6. Brilliant. I love it. The only critique I have is that when the grate screws were unscrewing, they were turning in the wrong direction.

    "Righty, tighty
    Lefty, loosy!"

(I know there are reverse-threaded stuff out there, but those are used primarily in rotating applications where the direction of rotation could influence the screws tightening direction.

    Seriously, excellent work!

    • Yeah, he'd probably excel at that Rocks Fall Everyone Dies storyline style Ton seems to like so much.

After seeing the trailer, I too want to see the rest of the story.

  7. This is one of the best "sizzle reels" I've seen in a long time. As far as your project goes, I don't think its dead yet. There is a lot of movie money that can be raised in pre-sales. You should considered shopping this reel around at AFM and Cannes and see what kind of interest it drums up.

  8. Absolutely fantastic! Ofcourse with 2 years of dedicated Blender hobbying you can reach this level, he has a great eye for film and building skills and lots of dedication!

I understand some will feel they may have been a Blender user for a long while and not reached this type of output, but please don't turn that sour and jump to 'well its just not possible, he's lying etc'. I have known a couple of examples through my years using Blender of this, also take into account the focus he had on this one big project. "They won't remember how long it took but they'll remember how good it was" =)

Cheers and congrats again to the completion of a great work of love!

  9. Many people have dreams, ... some .. can really make it happen ! Tom is one of them, I suppose ?
You're on the right track, Tom. Congratulations - and go on ! You're supreme !

  10. Guys, possibly we should write a message to Ton Roosendaal? He needs to contact to Tom i guess. This will be epic!

  11. He's allowed to self market. If someone is taking credit for anothers work Bart likely already would know this or it would be found out quickly. You aren't here to expose some secret agenda, please let it go OK =P

I think he knows that. Nobody misreads things as poorly as he does without deliberate effort to do so. Just another 'hatch'ling. :)
