Add-on: IES Files in Cycles
You can now import .IES photometric files into Cycles with this new add-on by Lockal.

Lockal released an useful add-on for importing and using real photometric (.IES) lamps directly in Blender Cycles. As a bonus you can select the colour temperature of the lamp in Kelvin!
After installation of this addon new item “IES To Cycles” appears inside “File” -> “Import” menu (also don’t forget about space menu).
This add-on both works with standard and latest development releases.

actually, (excuse my noob-ness) how do one use this add-on?
1 copy the code from the site. only the code, no line numbers.
2 open blender. in on window open the text editor.
3 click TEXT then CREATE TEXT BLOCK. paste the text.
4 select all text in text block CTRL A
5 click FORMAT then UNINDENT then CONVERT WHITESPACE to SPACES
6 click TEXT then SAVE AS. save it where you want with a name you want with file extension .py
7 restart blender. FILE then USER PREFERENCES then ADDONS then INSTAL FROM FILE.
8 navigate to the location you saved the file at, and instal and enjoy.
this is the way i did it. others may do it differently. i hope it helps. if you have questions just ask. cheers.
is this addon just for linux or can i use it in windowa to , with these instructions
1) Click the Download Gist button on the left of the code, and you download an archive file containing the required .py file.
2) Unpack the file to Blender’s Addons folder.
3) At the bottom of Blender’s User Preferences > Addons tab, click Install from file.

i had no idea what Gist is or was.
This looks very interesting but I doen’t fully understand exactly what’s going on. When I imported an .ies file, a lamp appeared in Blender. So is this lamp a near-perfect simulation of the actual light source, in terms of color, spread, etc.?
