Kaleb Lechowski used a combination of Maya, ZBrush, Blender, Nuke and After effects in this impressive short movie.

Kaleb writes:

Mainly I worked with Maya, but used Blender and zBrush for the modeling. I sat at the compositing with Nuke and After Effects - supported by Photoshop. The whole production is covered here for seven months, the entire second half until the middle of the third.

The fact that it was a solo project, I had all the freedom to try me on science fiction, because I did not know if I had the chance in the team would offer again. Was important to me, especially a solid story, a neat, intriguing dialogue, the first experiments with the Maya Muscle system and contact with Dave Masterson as an actor. By the sound of Hartmut Zeller I got a big boost for my project. Also, I had specific ideas in terms of animation and the facial expressions of my aliens.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. It's a great short!
I was surprised how fast he made it, but after reading more I noticed the university computers were used to render... and I'm still surprised how fast he made it.
    Congratulations!

  2. Just impressive: and a great mastering of the techniques, lightning... but containing them for the story:
Is is really at the level of biggest productions !

  3. Very nice! I like seeing one-man animation projects like this (well, one-man being besides the voice actor and the sound guy, who also did good jobs there). I hope Blender has a muscle simulation system of its own some day, because Maya's Muscle system works beautifully and it's always been something I've hoped for (to give more realistic muscle animation). I hope to perhaps see a continuation of this project soon. :)

  4. Amazing that is completed by one person. Great images, and the alien is very good, but the HK's are becoming a cliché now - they belong to the Terminator films.

  5. Great job. Intriguing story, spectacular models and effects, capturing sound ... all in all a perfect job!!! Two thumbs up ... if you start like that, only the sky seems to be your limit :)

  6. Amazing job! It's obvious you're going to get far, just keep going :)
    Want some constructive criticism? ;)
I found two things in the video which maybe could be better (imho of course): the smoke particles when the tower is collapsing - they disappear to fast. And the camera movement when we see the main character from behind running (it could be more shaky). But those are really the only things I could notice and you have to look hard to see them. Even Hollywood movies have errors, more than yours ;)
