Video Tutorial: Fake Caustics in Cycles

Learn how to achieve a caustics effect using a node shader.

Matthew Heimlich writes:

Just completed a video description of a material that will allow fast fake caustics in Cycles. It's especially useful for those interested in having a caustic effect that looks visually pleasing but aren't so interested in the super long render times required for true caustics in a path tracer. Anyway, hopefully it can be of some use to someone out there. Hope you all enjoy!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Cycles is showing its power more and more. There are so many good ways to do spectacular things, both by physically accurate methods and the old reliable quick workarounds. And even the shortcut methods make stunning results easy to achieve!
