Blender 2.65 Released

43

The Blender Foundation has released Blender 2.65. Major improvements are:

  • Smoke simulator now supports fire, adaptive domains and interaction with moving objects.
  • Cycles now has official Open Shading Language support and motion blur.
  • Bevel tool has improved rounding.
  • Decimate modifier now preserves UV coordinates and vertex colors.

There's much more, so be sure to check the release log!

From the announcement:

The Blender Foundation and online developer community is proud to present Blender 2.65. We focused on making this the most stable release in the 2.6 cycle yet, fixing over 200 bugs.

Fire simulation was added along with many improvements in smoke simulation. In Cycles, motion blur, open shading language and anisotropic shading support was added. For mesh modeling, the bevel tool was much improved, a new symmetrize mesh tool was added, and new Laplacian smooth, decimate, and triangulate modifiers are available.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Really a big thanks Ton and all the team. The news tools seems to be awesome. I do not know how much OSL is gonna affect Cycles but I do hope and encourage that the Devs out there knowing this, would give us some great shaders.
Oh, if there are already free ones available for the community to use. Please tell us where and how to instal and use them :).

So good to see the Decimate modifier rewritten! Thats one tool you cant go without :)
Cheers to the devs for another awesome release

  3. I get this error trying to download the 64 bit Mac version.

    Not Found

The requested URL /blender.org/release//Blender2.65/blender-2.65-rOSX_10.6-x86_64.zip was not found on this server.

  4. Really nice release !

Real motion blur is "must to have" features. happy to see it in these release! But I did a smal test and it's possible the motionblur is linear ? It's not take in account subframe. If I have a fast animation with a circular move , the motionblur inbetween frame are straight. A option exist ?

  5. anybody having trouble downloading to windows, i dont get any addons, screen in preferences is blank. aaarrrgggg. help me.

    • Hi!

I have no problem with the release.
Go to BlenderArtists.org forum and ask any help there. You'll get it quicker and better. Good luck!
P.S. Shortly - be sure you've installed everything is in the requirements (nothing special). http://builder.blender.org/download/ - it's the place for freshest builds. Graphicall.org for many different builds and branches.

      • thanks for the reply , i've been all over the place since about 11:30 last night.gonna try a grafficall, miikaweb. already posted on blenderartists no reply yet.the worst part is not knowing if its something im doing wrong or not.well, off i go.

  6. Thank you Ton and all Blender Dev. Team!
These new modifiers are great! Keep it up in this mood and Blender will become a really versatile tool for professionals and beginners also.
Laplacian Smooth as I understand can really help with Fluid simulation forms. New Decimate is cool for low-poly char. creators (not only!)
In the section of Generate Modifiers I wish for something to make a "fractal fill": converting faces to adjacent triangles forming natural spider net like (not round nets) structures. It's very good for Cloth simulations. Creating these manually is a real pain.
Bevel tool is almost ready but still need some improvement. It gives different spikes in difficult (but real) cases.
I must try all other tools but I'm sure it's coming only better :)
Adaptive domain and Fire simulation must be real gifts!

  7. Fire? Motion blur? OSL? Su-weeeeeeeeeeet! This looks like a juicy release, indeed. I've been longing for motion blur ever since cycles came out, so this release has me doing a little happy dance.

    Thanks Ton and Team!

  8. Thank you Ton, and the BF team,
for still catering to slightly older Macs!!

Your 32-bit build works like a charm for me.   ^_^

  9. From Blender Trunk:

    [100%] Building C object source/creator/CMakeFiles/blender.dir/buildinfo.c.o
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/local/lib/libLLVMAsmParser.a', needed by `bin/blender'. Stop.
    make[1]: *** [source/creator/CMakeFiles/blender.dir/all] Error 2

Is there a reason Blender must be built against static libraries, and not shared object libraries?

    • That's better asked on the blendercoders irc channel.
It would appear that LLVM is always linked static (not sure if there is a reason why) You could try changing the top CMakeLists.txt (search for set(LLVM_STATIC YES) ) if you want. Getting to the end of the build you may just have an older version installed that doesn't include that lib - I think LLVM 3.1 is needed
LLVM is required for OSL to function (it is used to compile the osl scripts) so you can turn off WITH_LLVM and WITH_CYCLES_OSL if you don't want that.

  10. is it me or has the shortcut for zooming in has been reversed? I thought it was CTRL+MMB+drag DOWN to zoom in, now it's CTRL+MMB+drag UP?

  11. Excellent work!

Although, it would be nice if Blender had full support for Alembic so that we can at least import/export data from other applications for lighting and rendering...

  12. well finally got 2.65 to losd. seems you dont need the enviorment variable set fot python anymore. was having problems a couple of years ago and that fixed it. oh well there's always some angst. thanks blenderartists. oh yea , and someone called "ideasman " the info wasnt meant for me but it worked. woho.

  13. anybody know if the "jet propulsion" script is available anywhere. cant find it on extensions page, wiki says coming soon. i'd like to test it out. sounds very interesting.
