Tutorial: Sculpting with UVs and Displacements

4

Michalis presents a cool technique that uses displacement maps to achieve an amazing effect.

He writes:

Inspired from some zbrush technics of my good friend MelaleaYing.

Most of all, inspired from the Prometheus movie and specifically from the work of this excellent russian artist.

He's the man behind the 3d rebuilding of the alien ship.
OK, common technics in zbrush but what about blender?

Here's some tests on the following technic. Post yours, let's start a thread on this kind of sculpting.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I'm glad sculpting in Blender's getting more attention these days. The more focus on it we give it, the more development the sculpting features Blender will get due to more developments from Blender Foundation and from add-ons from various developers abroad. I hope we could perhaps someday have a dedicated spot on BlenderArtists dedicated just to sculpting, to sharing sculpting techniques and works-in-progress. :)

  2. I would encourage people to read the BA post that describes this technique. It's actually not sculpted at all, the surface is all displacement which is why it's so awesome/powerful. This is one of the best techniques for "greebling" that I have seen so far in Blender! Go check it out!
