Developer Meeting Notes, November 11, 2012

Blender 2.65 development has entered "BCon3" status - just feature fixes, bug fixes and get ready for release. Planning for release of 2.65 early December is on track.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Hi all,

Here's the notes from today's meeting in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders

1) Blender 2.65 release status

  • UI translations: Bastien Montagne tested boost::locale, it works much better than our current gettext library. Meeting agrees on removing gettext/iconv and have the i8n module use boost for it. Bastien will handle this further with the platform maintainers.
  • Thomas Dinges mentions OpenImageIO released stable 1.1. Brecht van Lommel will check on it.
  • Short discussion happened on how OpenImage and Blender's ImBuf/Image system could relate - but this is a topic for after the release.
  • OpenCL support for Cycles will be still on hold, and not part of release. You can compile it by setting CYCLES_TEST.
  • Two release targets were moved to 2.66 (Python nodes, Bullet integration).
  • Development will now enter "BCon3" status - just feature fixes, bug fixes and get ready for release. Planning for release of 2.65 early December is on track.
  • Massive bug tracker cleanup and fixing has paid of! We're already in the low 70ies! (Was 211 3 weeks ago).

2) Other projects

  • Sergey Sharybin worked several days on solving image thread conflicts (preview renders, UI, render). He couldn't solve it reliably yet. Will be checked on this week if there's a chance to add it, otherwise it's for later.

Thanks!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Lovin' seeing that bugcount go through the floor! Anyone know if there's a a target for getting the HIVE / BGE GSoC project merged? Anyone know how that actually went (I think they passed from memory...)

  2. ...bugtracker in the 70s. Wow :D The devs are storming through those bugs like a tornado, aren't they? Lovin' it!

Although I have no Python knowledge other than "Hello World", having nodes for it sounds interesting! Was it part of GSOC 2012 and I missed it?

  3. Great to see that the bug count is just going down, this in my opinion was one of the must do things in priority. Surely with all the effort the Devs are putting,2.65 is gonna be very stable.
Again big thanks to you guys.

  4. Before development on the scanline BI renderer is formally retired, what technical challenges would there be to overcome in bumping up the OSA samples for antialising a smidge? A maximum of 16 is a bit low but with Cycles rapidly overtaking it I can easily live with it, this is more of an I'm-still-curious-about-it question.
