Rob Tuytel recreated a part of Dutch history in Blender. His next project goes one step further.

Rob Tuytel writes:

Hello everybody, i'm back with a new project called ' the golden age 3D experience' down here some information about what it is about.

To bring back the history i invented a technique to reconstruct old cities with digital 3D modeling. In combination with a lot of old maps, it is possible to recreate it, and that gives an impressive image of the cities.

Last year we launched the first project, we put 22 digital stereoscopic paintings on 3D televisions. The result was amazing and there were a lot of questions how this was possible. It was also the first time in a Dutch museum to put virtual paintings on a 3D television, and also that was a great success.

So now we want to put things to the next level, in place of images we want to make 3D video

I'm already working on the next project, and that is all about the city of Hoorn. In 1987 a group of people made an impressive scaled model of the city, they worked 7 years on it and its very high detailed. We want to reconstruct a digital model and rebuild three places in an impressive 3D environment based on the scaled model, all in stereoscopic 3D video. This will be the most intense experience people ever had from the 17th century in the modern age.

    • @ Erick. Pergamon is still alive, but moving slowly due to lack of spare time. There's a "new" scene here: http://youtu.be/O7yh5NW9D6Y
Right now I'm trying to get cloth simulation to work on a makehuman model so I can add some People in the next scene.

Oh and back to the topic: I love the "Golden Age" project also. Just came back from the Netherlands, in parts they are still as beautiful as in this artwork.

  1. While much of that is awesome, and I realize it's not meant to be perfect quality - it reminds me of a bathtub shot, common especially in older war movies.
It looks like model ships in a bathtub trying to pretend they're big ships on the high seas.
But the ship models themselves look amazing.

  2. something went wrong with my previous post :-)
hi, great work! i remember the old BN post with first results… nice!
could you give more details about
"To bring back the history i invented a technique to reconstruct old cities with digital 3D modeling. In combination with a lot of old maps, it is possible to recreate it, and that gives an impressive image of the cities."

    it sounds fascinating… thanks, Marco

  3. @nikolardo - It looks like a model ships in a bathtub, that's right. i based these models on some replica's. Even when they look great in real life, you can still feel it's a replica and thats also ' one' of the reasons it's feels like tiny ships, but of course i'm working on that, there will be a tutorial on my youtube page how to make these ships.

@marco - it is fascination, lots of people are sceptical about this isea, but when i explain they are impressed by the techinique. maybe i spend some time on a tutorial, but it's verry complicated stuff and also a bit boring for blender people ;-)

@eduard - ' Does not work. Maybe with GameKit + Blender' yeah! game engine, also working on that, but not the blender game engine.. to slow. i think next year there will be a very nice demo benchmark, but it's not my most important target right now.

    @ Erick - do you have a link to your'e project ?
