I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
Right but as they grow at their tip they thicken at their base. The combination of both motions is exactly what is shown here. What gives you the impression of "tentacles" is that there is no branching. New branches would appear at a certain height at stay at that height which would fix the impression of "pushed up through the ground". BTW, regarding this point, the thorns shouldn't move up.
Thanks Bart. I did try and explain what I was doing with annotations, but they don't seem to show on the embedded player (?) - Watching it on YouTube should be fine though. Not as good as sound, but hey ho.
Thanks to Albinal and Bart (for posting it here)! The tutorial is good. Another things like pushing up ground and etc. is not hard to make I think (cell fracture, dynamic paint and so on... particles at least).
I saw the commercial of Scientology on YouTube with this tutorial... People, don't mess with this theory! This will lead you to their sect one day or later. Be careful and not curious about this! It's dangerous for your mind and your private properties.

Nice effect. The process can be useful in many ways.
Looks more like tentacles. Plants grow at their tip, they don't get pushed up through the ground.
