Making-Of: Low-Poly-Model "Kreatur"

By Zacharias Reinhardt.

here is a short making of a low poly model, I made a while ago. The conceptart and textures are made in photoshop and the 3d model in blender 2.6. The text in the video is in german, but I think it's not hard to figure out what it means. If you like it, it would be great if you post it on your awesome website!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Great model and texturing. Good texturing with Baked RGB Normal texture can give a really high poly look to a low poly model. A low poly model is easier to animate and uses less computing power... the drawback is that you have to model the high poly model as well !o)

  2. @cf692868866ff4500c51c8bddb22f139:disqus The Low-Poly IS the original. What you do is you duplicate the Low-poly object (in this case, the dino) and you sculpt the low-poly level by level until you obtain the lev of details you want. Then create a normal map and a bump map out of that high poly sculpt you just made. (You must UV unwrap the model first. Then from the UV editor save images accordingly) Return to your first L-P object and apply the images accordingly. (Bump map and normal map images must be linked specifically to properly play the role they are meant to.) Use the texture editor to do so.

Now the above is no way a proper ''how to do'' if you you're lost at what I wrote but there are at least a few good tuts on the net to show you exactly that.

  3. Beautiful work!

I would love to see you make Arzach's pterodactyl mount (ref: Moebius), I think you'd do an amazing job at that one, too. :)

  4. Great, model, but am I missing the tutorial link or making of, this is just a final render, I thought it was a tutorial of sorts, or atleast a timelapse?
