I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Wow that is some stunning work!
We need more of such quality stuff over here to show people what Blender is capable of.

  2. This is the type of stuff I see from the Zbrush community.  People will be like what?!?  "That was made in blender"  Skrew pixologic and autodesk.

  3. Wow this is amazing work!  I think it is great that you screencaptured the whole process.  If we all start doing this when working on our projects the whole community would benefit, way to go MmAaXx!

  4. Wow - that looks fantastic! I really loved watching how you did this  in the video as well. Interesting way of putting together this fairly complex looking image. I'm impressed on many levels.

Question though, you mentioned to Jeroen Hoolmans that the stuff you did in ZBrush could have been done in Blender. Why didn't you just stay in Blender? What was the benefit to moving into ZBrush? Just curious more than anything.

    •  Probably the same reason we use photoshop over gimp for things as simple as color correction, we can do it in gimp, but we have photoshop so use it as it is more familiar :)

      • It's only curious to me because if you're already in Blender why move to something else? You have to export your work and import - then export and import again.

Just seemed odd to me. Nothing else. Use the tools you have. I have a large list of tools I use that Blender could probably do. So I'm guilty of my own curiosity. heh

  5. Nicely done, that is a great looking render. I'm looking forward to checking out the timelapse, thanks for providing that for us to watch!

  6. Even if the use of Zbrush could have been done in Blender sculpt mode (or in Sculptris), as in the end he retopologize what he did anyways, it's an amazing and utterly impressive display of modelling skill in that timelapse.
I learned a few trick thanks to your video Max and your great talent, especially with the hand modelling, i'll try to train with this, as it's really well thought.

  7. Sculpting in Blender is not as comfortable as we all would like it to be ( of course, thanks to developers for having made it possible, and useful, too).
I think that very few artists around, if any, would happily dispose of zbrush by now.
    Besides, awesome work.

  8. The whole concept behind Zbrush's Interface (2.5, pixols etc.) is just awkward. I do love the advanced sculpting tools. But there is also no ability for pixel painting. Polypainting is useless if you don't have a high density mesh.
Too bad that the Sculptris guy decided to work for Pixologic. He would have contribute so much to Blender. Now Pixologic got his tessellation technology and selling it happily as "Pixologic's Dynamesh©TM(R)" And Sculptris... I guess it will ever stuck in it's alpha state now...

  9. Hi Guys! thank you very much!

    1) well, I use windows7 based machine with normal keyboard and 'Intuos 4 M' for everything (not just sculpt)
    2) I used Zbrush because Zbrush provide mask tools and because I have the lincese 8D
