I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I really want to like sculpting in blender. For some reason though my machine starts choking around a million polys and I just end up frustrated and using sculptris. Which is fine unless I want to enter a blender contest. I have win7, a gts 450, 8gigs of ram, a sandy bridge i3 and a wacom. Turning on airbrush helps but I just can't get a fluid sculpting experience. Does this sound right?

    • I had the same experience with blender sculpting. There was a developer creating sculptris like sculpting in blender, but I haven't seen anything about it for a while. I think he said he was waiting for bmesh to be ready before he could finish.
Awesome sculpt by the way! :D

      • I've seen an old video of someone sculpting a model with like 45 million polys or something with an old version of 2.5 alpha. That's why I'm wondering what's wrong when I get poor performance with a million polys.

I've tried multires, subdivision surf, applying the modifiers and lots of various settings but for some reason it still just doesn't feel very fluid.

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining. I love blender. I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong with sculpting.

        • There are a number of things you can do to improve your sculpting workflow.

Turn of double sided under the mesh data

Make sure you are starting with a mid- to high-poly base

Sculpt with Multires, never with subsurf.

          • Where can i turn off double sided ? Im looking for this button and dont see. I have the same problem  max poly for me this is 1 572 864 vert

  2. Info about this sculpt:
    I have a Intel dual core 3.2MHz with 2Gigs RAM and a Gef430. Not a powerful...
5 millions triangle, but the model is separated to parts.
On the video you can see the lowpoly baked version.

With this config I can sculpt in GLSL mode, so the Zbrush matcap textures are useable and this is a big help. So the shader that you see on the video is working when I sculpting.

    • When you say its seperated into parts, do you mean seperate objects or layers or what? How do you keep the vertices lined up for when you put it back together?

  3. Blender need to focus more time in the sculpting features, they are very powerfull but... again... is slow... we need tutorials about this.
