Yes, we can!

Update: here's a BlenderArtists thread with a description of a similar setup.

Greyscalestudio writes:

This is based on another Blender mocap video test out there. I used Blender 2.61 with motion tracking to track and save the face marker points from the video and then plugged in my cartoon model. There were very few markers on the face, and it would have been better if there had been a few more. As it was I had to overlay the nose wrinkle and lip sneer along with helping out the enunciation of a couple of words. I could refine it further, but I think it would be better to start over with a better source video with more markers. Anyway, no-cost face capture! Blender rocks.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. That is awesome, I've been considering a similar solution myself since mocap was added to Blender. How does one actually extract the pose data? Start from a neutral pose, get differences then wire them back into Shape key values?

Hey thats really impressive. It would be great if there would be an example file for blender. Also maybe a short discription how to do this. This is really amazing.
