I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. In five years, not only will blender have gobbled up a good share of Autodesks's market share, but PFTrack, Boujuo and Syntheyes as well. When the video sequence editor gets an upgrade, it'll blow Avid and Premiere out of the water. BGE will take Unity and the UDK. In the end Blender will rule the world.

    • Amen!! that is exactly what I think about the Blender development :)

it only need integrate GIMP inside to conquer the world!! XD

the BGE need work perfectly in the comercial plataforms like Iphone or maybe Andorid to catch more potential developers >:) ($$)

I personally was tired to try get a Stand Alone Game with the BGE, it was something big for my team... and they decided go for Unity for that reason :/

      Greetings

      • Taking out Unity or UDK .... well only if you could port for consoles and smartphones , tablets then probably yes . But UDK and Unity are free and ALOT better why not use them sicne theya re all free . I'd prefer a blender import-export for UDK , one with no problems and easy to use . UDK - Gears of War , BulletStorm , ALice Madness , Mass Effect , Batman ARkham , sorry but blender cannot do things that UDK can .

    • Like Erik90mx said, it needs to integrate GIMP.

Plus, it will only really rule over the world once it includes a browser that can run Gmail, Twitter and Facebook.

      • Oh, PLEASE not GIMP!  It's only advantage is that it's free.  Its user interface has always been abysmal, and unlike the changes in Blender there appears to be no interest in doing anything about it.

        • If not GIMP then why not its fork, GIMPshop?  It is GIMP reworked trying to locate tools where Photoshop has them:
"GIMPshop...s primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP."
          http://gimpshop.com

Anyways, I'd rather see GIMP integrated to agree with Blender keys....

          • GIMPshop is no longer maintained anymore, the version you can download from that website is ancient.
Regarding the interface it's just a matter of getting used to it anyway, just like Blender. Personally I like GIMP more than Photoshop, mainly because I'm used more to the former than the latter.

There is a way to integrate it into the workflow. It's not default, but it is a pretty easy to change system preference.

IMHO GIMP is underdeveloped in the UI and User Experience side of things, relatively simple things often have obscure keyboard shortcuts. I do hope to see it mature in the near future, but the community needs to develop before I can get heavily on board.

  2. This one really long way to find out if you look good in glasses, just borrow a pair off one of your friends...... :p

But seriously, this is very cool!!!

Do you need tracking? do you know what is it?
definition "blendie": a "feature" collector, just happy to have a software with "cool" features but don't know a f****** moment what to do with and if he really wanted to do something with it except to be sure to be part of something "cool"!

The head was modelled in order to mask out parts of the glasses as the woman turned her head. It looks to be a pretty generic model you just have to have the basic proportions of the head correct. The object tracking is acheived through the black spots on the woman's face which are mapped to the head and glasses model. Once the movements are mapped that head model would have been rendered out flat white and combined with the glasses render to mask out the parts that are obscured by the head as it turns and moves. So yeah, you had the basic order of things correct!

  3. I really need a good tutorial walking through how to track certain shots.  I sort of got some things working, but I had to do a long circular pan and I couldn't figure out how to make it work.  Initial points went off the screen so I added new points every 60 frames or so, and every time it transitioned to the next set, the camera would jump around.  Just need a thurough walk through from one of these people getting these amazing results!  And that is awesome!  Looks very very good.

This is really putting Blender in the framework for film VFX, exciting times I feel for Blenders direction. If they can only get CYCLES to work properly and efficiently I think they will have a major chance at entering this market for real.

  5. Impressive. I understand the workflow. But: I have paths from the track. I have a model with corresponding markers. How do I "map" the tracker paths to the corresponding points / markes on my Model?
