Trailer: A Walk in the Dark

21

A trailer for an upcoming indie game project by developers Flying Turtle Studios. The game is being developed for the PC, and is an eerie looking platformer where you play as a cat trying to find it's owner in a dark forest.

Paulo Silva writes:

We wanted to show you the trailer for our new game A Walk In the Dark.
I'm Paulo, from the Flying Turtle Software, the small indie team behind this game.

Today we are launching our trailer.

I've used blender to do all the 3d renders for the trailer. The game is being developed using XNA and we intend to release it as an downloadable pc game next year. I hope you liked the trailer :)

The story behind the game:

"Arielle and her cat, Bast, spend a pleasant afternoon in the forest.
Bast, being free from the usual four walls of their home, can’t stay in one
place. He runs around playing with everything that moves and most of
things that don’t too. In his haste to enjoy everything, he ends up
getting away from Arielle.

He starts to hear her calling for him, but the forest is such an
interesting place. There are so many things, so much space. Some little
creatures challenge him. Bast pursues the little fellows. It feels great
to run in the forest.

He is about to catch one of them. He jumps to grab it but he fails. He
falls on top of some old stones. Something breaks under him. A cold
breeze ruffles the trees chilling him to the bones. A smoke rises
forming a shadow. The shadow gains form and then matter. Someone,
something hovers above him. Some ancient foul-smelling thing that nails
him to the ground. Bast is unable to move.

Nearby, Arielle calls for him. The thing, the Spirit, turns around. As Arielle
comes closer, the Spirit flies in her direction and envelops her. Bast
hears the muffled screams of Arielle. They grow fainter as the spirit
disappears in the forest.

Bast is alone. The sounds of the night emphasize that feeling.
Arielle is gone, and it is his fault.

He realizes that the once pleasant forest became a strange and dark place.
He starts running, hoping to help her. He fears it is to late."

And so it starts…

  1. Beautiful music;
    Really nice athmosphere...

Yet I'm not that convinced about animations and IMHO the "reflex" kinda king doesn't fit the eerie mood of it. I'd expected something different when I sew the intro... i'll look forward to it tho.

Oh! And I want 2:00 as a wallpaper!

  2. Nice! The game looks very mutch like Limbo... about the trailer, the only thing i don´t like is the music... but nice work!

  3. Gravity Guy on the iPod touch has a similar game play (switching gravity to run on the top or bottom of the screen).  It's a fun game and this one looks promising too.

  4. There are some very nice shots in the trailer. Especially the opening sequence and the ones with the 'creature'.

But then, there are other shots, which just doesn't fit with the style of the rest. The closeups e.g. or, while done very good, the smoke thing just doesn't fit in for me ( from a style perspective).

Oh, and what music is this. Is it an original soundtrack or an existing piece. I would appreciate any info on this.

  5. I had to search for "Limbo". Well it does is the same type of game, but wasn't it also Super Mario 64 and Banjo Cazoy for the N64 or Quake and Doom... I don't see it as a copy but as a game in the same genre :)

  6. Limbo clone... and not NEARLY as awesome. Also looks like it "lifted" a little of its game play from gravity guy. C'mon be original guys.

  7. This looks pretty slick. I think the biggest strength is the trailer IMHO. While the game DOES look fun, it also looks more like a mobile game. Maybe you're wasting time making it for PC and you should look more into a tablet game?

  8. Flash games had silhouette platformers way before 'Limbo' so no use in calling it clone.

Same deal with Angry Birds with all the people who think the game-play was original, there were at least 5 previous flash games that had the exact same game-play.

Just saying to all the people think that the commercial trendy stuff is so original..
