An impressive short movie done with Blender And Daz Studio by Jesús Orellana.

Jesús writes:

ROSA is an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival.

The short-film was created entirely by young comic-artist Jesús Orellana with no budget during a single year.

The short-film was created entirely by young comic-artist Jesús Orellana with no budget during a single year. Since it's world premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival, ROSA has been an official selection at film festivals around the world such as Screamfest, Toronto After Dark, Anima Mundi or Los Angeles Shorts Film Festival. In October ROSA was screened at the opening night of the Sitges International Film Festival, considered the world's best festival specialized in genre films. Following the succesful festival run, the short film has attracted the attention of the major talent-agencies and Hollywood producers. Currently ROSA is in development to be a live-action motion picture.

I contacted Jesús and asked him how Blender was used in this project. He answered:

I used Daz Studio as the base program, everything was planned, animated and rendered in Daz Studio. I used Blender to model and modify props, as well as for all the physics like for example cloths, plastics or blood that were later added in post-production to the Daz Studio Renders.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. This made my jaw hang down.
One guy?! DAZ3D + Blender ?! Not to speak about the mastering of movie directorship techniques.
I feel myself puny as an ant before this artist.

  2. cool stuff, some parts of the video reminds me scenes from Thief`s cutscenes(ambient sound, wines growing from Victoria`s green blood, glyphs)... really good job

    Jesús Orellana,
    you did everything amazing!
I see not a moment where I can critique here.
And just a single year... Simply unbelievable. I wish to see you as a part of Mango project.

  4. I'll give him props.
Thanks for not putting that dumb blender movie bloom haze in your short, still looks a bit hazy.
    Very impressive turn around.
I have a feeling all this can be done in blender once some original features return to the software. ( modeling  mainly)

Why does Blender always feel half-baked... Okay enough complaining.
On topic: This short is very impressive and polished.  Go Blender! Yah DAZ?!? :P

  5. ..WOW, i rarely comment in this site, but this is different.. Superb in almost any aspect.. Congrats to Mr. Jesús Orellana for this one of a kind Masterpiece

:: sorry for my bad English ::

  6. The quality of the overall movie is mindbogglingly good, my only crit it that some of the edits are too fast but thats probably  taste issue rather than a quality issue.

  7. Looks, visually, fantastic! Good eye for camera direction, focus, etc. Interesting little details - like a small nail in a board she jumps off toward the end ... nothing big, but the subtle details is what makes something look more realistic and legit.

    Well done eyecandy.

  8. Stunning!!! I am amazed with everything you created in this piece, from the story line, modeling, lighting, animation.... the whole 9...
***** 5-Stars my friend :) You have some insane skills
Congrats Jesús Orellana, You are very talented, and I look forward to seeing more of your work.
    Cheers,
    ~Tung

  9. I'm just gobsmacked by this.  I've done some large solo projects, but nothing of that magnitude.  That is some of the most impressive *everything* I have ever seen.  I hope you make a killing in the industry.  That much talent and work-ethic flowing out of you should get you anywhere you want to go.

  10. Beautiful work. I would appreciate more information, though--or confirmation from the artist himself--as to how this short was made, more specifically, what software was used other than Blender and DAZ studio and who else or how many--if any--contributed to the film. This short includes choreographed martial art, top-notch sound design and music--to mention just a few--all supposedly coming from a singular "young comic artist?"

    • Kirill Poltavets on

Believe me, making the sounds and music like this isn't that hard... as all everything he did. So compare to all modelling, texturing, lighting, particles, post-processing and (the most hard I think) scenery and animation is much much harder to do than this soundtrack and sounds. I can believe that he also made (or placed some free sounds) the sounds and the soundtrack. BTW - it can be some mocap pieces accurately mixed together.

  11. Was going to be the first to post, but got sidetracked trying to ascertain that the date wasn't April 1st?

One person, One Idea, One Machine, One Year.........ONE HELLUVA SHORT.

The futures bright. I cannot wait to see this made into a full length movie.

  12. The more I see of this the more I have my doubts. As I commented on blenderartists, there is something not quite right about this - especially the disingenuous claim that it had "zero budget" (and yet the author of this work tells us, in an interview on another site, he bought a new Mac to finish it!)

I will have more faith in Jesús when I see some wireframes (of which none are to be found on his website). I'd also like him to explain how, if he was so new to 3D modelling and Blender a year ago, how he doesn't appear to have asked any questions on any of the Blender sites and yet claims to have used the cloth and other physics.

Credit where credit is due, but only after more supportive evidence than the words of the artist alone.

    • Some people don't ask that much in forum/sites... Since there's people that ask dupe questions and all, sometimes you can find your answers without asking.

One other thing... If he used mostly DAZ, you can understand how fast he got the whole thing going.
And you DO notice that the characters are somewhat bland (in the good ol' fashioned DAZ way :D)

  13. @George_Kim:disqus I highly suspect all of the martial arts choreography was copied from a collection of other films, which isn't a criticism, almost all major filmmakers (especially Tarantino / Lucas) pull in shots / cinematography / action sequences etc from a wide range of other movies. The question is whether it's done in a way that works, and here, imo it definitely does. I wouldn't be surprised though if there was some help with sound stuff, and along the way "Jesus did all the visuals" started getting reported as just "He did the *whole thing!*".

Regardless, this is an extraordinary short with beautiful texturing and lighting, stunning cinematography, well done action sequences and an exquisite level of detail. I really enjoyed the different take on "post apocalyptic' to the usual brown, desaturated desert look we usually get. Didn't quite get where the "evil Rosa" came from or why, but the rest of it was stunning. 10/10 jesus!

    • I appreciate your comment, Blendiac.

Short films of this quality are usually made to attract investors or clients. If they ever fail to represent the artist's actual capabilities correctly, it might lead to huge loss of time and money on the part of clients and investors who showed interested in the artist due to the film. That's what I'm worried about.

  14. It's a wonderful, artistic and inspiring piece of work to be sure (in any suite of applications), but my gut feeling is that some of the 'making of' facts' are a bit exaggerated.

  15. Santísimo Sacramento! Jesus, I beg you to please, please, Please!, write a tutorial on eye rigging... Second 39 is simply gorgeous, as well as 42... How do you make the adipose tissue around the eyes to look so wonderful?  I had seen a setup like this, but only in real people... lol.  Hermoso trabajo

  16. Ha HA HA.....Sorry guys I don't bite this !  One man project? in one year? Sorry....

The film is outstanding, however it has way too many props, environments, effects, dynamics, fluid, particles that really makes me doubt that this was made by just one man within a year or so? Come on !

I would believe more of who made it when I see wireframes and some insight information about this. Otherwise this is a simple scam for me, sorry :(

  17. uffff espectacular, lo mejor que e visto de blender hasta el momento y lo que bienen con la versionb 2.61 Blender es lo mejor!!!!!!

  18. I have being doing so research about this film. Are you sure this is not other snicky commercial from the competition? It seems Blender has nothing to do with this,  rather than some drops of blood? And some "simple" clothing used? That were later incorporated into DAZ Studio? This is very fishy, again the competition has wet pants every time Blender progresses with a new and powerful release.

Bart, I think you should be more clever about posting things from the competition. Now we have entire films made in other 3D Software and then they said: """I used Blender to Play Music in the Background""""..... Puff........ then the short is featured at  Blender Nation? Why don't you ask for proofs? Some wireframes before letting the competition snick in? This film has nothing to do with Blender rather than some drops of blood !  Which I still doubt, What a shame.

  19. I call this a "Hermit Production" where 1 man, 1 year and 1 computer comes together to create an awesome short film.  This is probably the end result of many years of conceptual planning that only materialized after he obtained the skills to produce it.  This is an impressive 1 hit wonder.  If Jesus pulls off another one in the near future then I'm sure all the major studios would be trying to hire him.

  20. the more I think about this animation, the more it annoys me. Not the film itself, which is great, but the claims that support it, which don't make any credible sense at all.

    • It seems that  all Jesus don't  show their face when  facing a big thing like this DAZ Commercial Project !

Please Jesus, make us believe on you !  Make us believe you did it and that you really exist !  :)

       Would you show some wireframes?

Jesus....I pray for your presence....... please Don't hide yourself !

  21. Amazing piece of art..Can't believe some of these insecure whiners.. Blender is great, but it's not the only way for an artist to create their visions. Some of you guys really need to grow up...

    Great work, whatever you used...

    • With respect, I don't think there are any whiners in the thread. There is unanimity in praise for the creative and production quality of the film to the extent that the software used is immaterial. It's just that the production parameters as offered are a little hard to swallow - 1 guy, 1 year, 1 computer. Even with weapons-grade hardware, animation in any application is a slow, laborious process with lots of issues to solve, and in practice things don't always go forwards without a hitch, particularly when there are a lot of elements and a story to balance out. The Rosa website states that there are 385 shots @ 2K, and the interview states that there were 'minutes' of footage edited out. That is a lot of animation (and still testing) to get through even leaving aside compositing and other processes, and many scenes are very dense in terms of content. I just think some clarification would be helpful, and interesting. I really don't mind if one person or a hundred were involved in the making of this, but I do mind if the facts are a little loose.

  22. I can't understand how one person could have done this given the stated limitations.
If you told me a team of people did this, I'd still be impressed.
Whatever the real story, very inspiring work!

  23. It cracks me up listening to people give there take on the technical aspects of this short. The film is a gorgeous production. The camera angles, lighting and action sequences are top notch. I can understand peoples doubts about it being a "one man show". But quite frankly who gives a crap about wireframes and such. The wireframes do not prove a thing. It's obviously 3d. You can't fake that and showing them proves nothing.

Just enjoy the damn thing for it's artistic greatness.

    • If you just like to enjoy films then go and watch movies at the theater. Here we are discussing technical aspects of 3D work, like quality vs time vs hardware vs manpower. It is obvious that you are not in the technical 3D field, you are a passive viewer who just relax watching a film falling asleep. It is obvious when the author does not show it means he has provided FALSE information about the  production pipeline. Which is obvious by default.

  26. Ernesto Del Valle on

People, just do a little research about DAZ Studio, the software used, and you will understand why it was only one man project... This software makes sooo much for you, you only have to focus on directing and conceptualizing the thing. The 3D was not made by Jesus, he used a software that did all the 3D hard work for him (except the props and stuffs done in Blender) and then, he focused on directing. That's it ;) The video has a really awesome value of creativity and direction. Not so much for dirty 3D work, but it has it's value. ;)

Again, Do reasearch about DAZ Studio and you'll see what i'm talking about ;)

Great directing and conceptualizing by Jesus, much congrats to him in his asention to "the industry" ;)

    • What do you mean? DAZ will do modeling and lighting without human intervention? If that's the case I will get serious about learning it !

      • Ernesto Del Valle on

Well, of course it needs human intervention, but it's like creating a character in an mmorpg or a similar game, you select the type of the model, the clothing, hair and so on, pre-made animations and integrated rig... look for it in youtube ;)

    • Thank you for your clarification and sanity check, Ernesto. It puts the whole thing in some kind of context, though I must confess, it leaves me feeling a little confused, as though I had just digested and enjoyed a good meal, only to find out that it had been cooked in a microwave from a packet. Therein lies the problem ... when we know how a meal is made ...doesn't it change our perception of the aftertaste ? :))

    • Thanks for clarifying on the use of DAZ studio. Indeed, the software helps a lot.  Jesus has got some great directing and conceptualizing skills though and I have to say hats off too!

This film is testimony to his love of art and film.  A look at the level of detail on each scene is sufficient to give you the idea.

As for the use of DAZ or blender, I will like to make a comment.

Even if you give a person the best tools, it takes creativity and perseverance (and a lot of hard work) to come up with such a masterpiece.  Most people have got MsWord on their laptops but they don't churn best selling novels as a result.

Congrats to Jesus and all the best for his next move into the movie business.

    • you make it sound soo easy..
besides the point is clear, its what you just watched not how you speculate he went about creating it.
I agree on DAZ it does do a lot for you from what i can see. I used to hate the idea but im beginning to think that is a good thing, maybe i could finally make something worthwhile if i allowed myself the possibility of using different software. its just i would so greatly prefer to support opensource software instead. :/
      Now im confused :/

  27. I don't if it's right to say it's no budget, since I think there is some of DAZ commercial products, just pay attention, and explore the daz store a little .

  28. Just thought I'd add that the audio/explosion footage is all from video co-pilot, in case no one pointed that out. The music is from Pro Scores, A lot of the sound effects sound like they're from the designer sound effects DVD and the explosions are from Action essentials 2. While the final mix is a unique track made from the pro-scores elements there is a limit to how much he "made himself". Of course not to belittle his achievements but I hope that provides some context for people skeptical about how this was made. I've sat through dozens of un-watchable   shorts using these elements so it does go to show what you can do with a unique sense of style and aesthetic.

  29. Not impressed. Nice visuals, but meh, it's boring as hell. Two cybernetic things fight each other using Kung Fu, slo-mo and numerous cliches from cyberpunk movies, one wins. The End (sorry, "The Log Off" -- it's cyberpunk after all). It can be a good intro for a pointless teenager videogame, but that's all. It's sad to see that a lot of time and talent were wasted to such a nothing in the shell.

    • Not that sad and not a waste. He's got plenty of notice from Hollywood and may be directing a live action feature which was I believe one of his goals.

  30. While it's cool that he got some attention for his work, I personally
feel it's boring and overrated. What's the story? All I see is different
cyborgs shooting at each other for no apparent reason. How exactly can
you stretch this out into a feature length movie? Coming from a supposed
comic book artist, surely he knows that success rests on having a good
story, which this is most definitely lacking. But then again, Hollywood
doesn't exactly care about good story, just lots of explosions and
    gunfire. :P

  31. Amazing
Perhaps there is reason to question the originality or quality of some aspects, but that is not what's important.
It is a work of art with a unique aesthetic
    That is the point.

  32. stelios chatzopoulos on

Do we know what was the postproduction software he used? It's not clear and this short film was heavily based on postproduction.

  33. I don't get why people are upset he used Daz. You're not exposing him by saying you saw some of his products in the Daz store. He's allowed to use them maybe some of you pointing out that it "he didn't do much work." Should real the Daz EULA. He's allowed to use the character for anything long as he doesn't distribute the actual model. It's kind of like Miku Miku Dance except most Miku Miku Dance models you can't use for commercial purposes. Daz is a great way if you want to get something done in a short amount of time, modeling takes hours to do and it probably would have taken him years to make a short movie like that if he had to build the models all the way up.
Yes-yes I know "but it takes the creativity out he'll never learn." Sometimes we want to focus more on animating than character design. A lot of work went into this, and it's so annoying when people make it seem like people that use daz studio don't put any work into it...sure some of the renders are crap but they are some really great artist out there who create amazing renders.

Teaches on though. Same people hate Daz probably hate make human and fuse mixamo too.

With a little kit bashing though you can use the daz models and your own stuff creating a completely orginal character. It's just like playing dressup with dolls.

  34. So sad read the comment section, many people (probably kids) complaining about he used DAZ products.
If you saying DAZ3D is cheating, just make your own animation, and share it as comparison to this short movie.

I was working in a medium agency with a hundred employees, at that time, I created anything from scratch.

When I was working in small studio with 10 employees, and now as solo freelancer, I need to use a module from DAZ, because if I made all of the model from scratch, how long to finish a short animation ? And your client willing to wait for years ?

It's legal to use DAZ products, or buying a 3D model and then modify it, because you have commercial license for it.

If you're complaining about DAZ, you're complaining Substance Painter too ? They have texture module, you better to took a photo by your self, right ?

In professional world, we must think what best with our budget, and time, we can't generalize the workflow with a million dollar company, they have a lot of money, and resources.

Personally, I think this short movie is lack of story, but the execution really impressive, the details, etc, and DAZ is not really good for complex animation like this, so this animation is beyond anyone expectation.
