Sad Future

30

TomWalks is doing some experimenting for a short movie he is working on. Awesome Blade Runner atmosphere!

Tom writes:

Once again, I'm practicing with the blender's compositer in order, later (when i'll be able get that movie like "professional look"), to make a 100% Blender short movie, mixing live and 3D elements. I hope to involve Cycles renderer in the party next time and see what it could look like.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Nice testing!
Between, don't try to achieve a "professional look" but rather a "not so bad look"(sort of :)), "professional" doesn't mean anything.

  2. Most impressive. Oddly, I find that future not quite sad. Flying cars suggests either an amazing power source or anti-gravity tech. Bipedal, humanform robots are disposable. Large, full-color displays are ubiquitous. But who knows what the society is like? Maybe it's a police state. Or this represents the best a collapsing civilization has left.

Anyway, keep up the amazing work. I look forward to seeing more of this sad world you're creating.

  3. A really nice work, even if the result doesn't look "professional", probably caused by lack in the blender internal render system. Waiting for the cycles version!

    • @Barz No! You can't blame the lack of quality on the render engine!! There have been some awesomely realistic and "professional" renders people have made with the internal render - and some seriously crappy renders from cycles.

But yes cycles would probably make it more realistic.

@Tom - As for the vid, I really like it! If you're looking to achieve "professionalism" then I suggest letting go of the cool compositing effects (especially the ghost glare). If you watch films, they seldom go over-board in those kinds of the effects, but rather use lighting and composition (not compositing), that is the positioning of the scene and camera angle, to make it appealing.
A wise guy told me once that the moment you think "maybe this is too much compositing" you've probably done a huge amount too much already :)

Great work so far man :)

      • I wasn't blaming on lack of quality on the blender render engine :D, I think that it is just a "generic" rendering system. I mean, with the blender internal, you can do lot's of things such as cartoons and even photorealistic rendering, and that's a good thing, but BI is not a rendering system focused on photorealism like the Cycles, so some BI features don't reflect the reality. An example could be the specularity. In real life the light doesn 't make that "white circle" that we call in blender specular reflection, but has a different behaviour (looks similar to the blender specularity, but is different). So probably I have used the word "lack" in an improper way (I'm not english :D) and probably there was a misunderstanding.

  4. Looks very very good.  And I'd say the only reason it doesn't look "professional", ie, movie quality is time and manpower.  Even the simplest 3d scenes take 50 of us working primarily on the background elements (ie. not the characters) for a month to get it almost right, each person just focusing on one little aspect of it and making it perfect.  Then there is a team of 10 or so that go back and adjust and have us redo elements that they feel are lacking.  Seeing one person doing this much work in this wide range of areas is awesome.  Keep up the great work!

  5. It looks pretty cool, and I agree with @07419733b049445d3d4a42654a0503f4:disqus , "Professional look" doesn't really means that much; try instead for a "believable look", a "realistic look", or a "Blockbuster summer movie look"... Being a Professional in this industry doesn't means you always achieve or want this kind of look in your work. :D

And I say it again, is a pretty cool test!!!

  6. Yep you did really well!!!! Love it!!! this is what I saw Blender being used for when I first encountered it!!!

Well done and keep up the good work!

OH! and get a steady cam mount. you can get fairly cheap ones that at least stop your foot falls from shaking the cam so bad.

  7. You are digging into a bright future, you got talent. Like your style and effects. Hope to see your final project soon !

  8. Usage of Blender's tracker is nice but it's just one piece of the puzzle. It will be always very amateurish without good art concept and skilled performance. Like in this case.

  9. Cool to see a glimps of the capabalities of Blender.  I really dig what you've done here. My only critic would be the post after FX. They look really cool!, but IMHO a bit overdone overall. My motto, less is more, FX should blend in the scene and not distract, and really bring out post FX to highlight something "special" or "magical" to evoke emotion at key points. Just a general rule I'll try to follow, but rules are made to be broken from time to time. :-)

Great atmosphere and amazing work! Really appreciate you sharing your hard work. Hope to see more!

  10. Very impressive work and mood, especially for a one-man and full-blender job ! Some posters should blend more and talk less to understand the work involved ! ;)

    Congrats !

  11. O_O  Well done, good sir.  My reactions were something like:
    1.  Hey, that looks really good.
    2.  Hey, that music contains bits of Anachronox music...
    3.  Woah, that LOOKS like bits of Anachronox!  (Only much better, of course.)
I don't know if that was the goal, but again:  Well done, good sir!

  12. Hello. Really nice job. I do agree with No comments :). Continue the nice job and really good luck for the future.

Your compositing work is just grazy!!!

  13. This is really really great stuff. The first scene is the most powerful one. The jittery taxi sign in the back is an example of a great detail. It's not quite as dark as Blade Runner, because it's somehow still to smooth. The music really helps, gives a BSG remake
    feel to it.

  14. "TomWalks is doing some experimenting for a short movie"

for anyone questioning his skills or whether or not he's "professional" you should really take a look at his short film Space Oddity it's really very impressive.

Can't wait to see what you come up with Tom!

  15. Wow this is very professional to me. Where did you learn how to do this stuff, especially implementing the objects in video recordings?
